Where do you have the most success with YOUR clothes shopping?

candace-that skirt sounds great, I think I saw it at the mall when I was shopping this weekend. I think twin-sets look cute & pulled-together and just a bit more casual than a jacket.

HImom–true, high quality paper does give things a more elegant feel!

Once I save some $$, I’m going to spring for some comfortable pumps at the Walking Co. The ones I tried on were incredible! I can wear black Dansko clogs for now (in an office, w/pants) but for more formal appearances, comfy pumps would be awesome!

Jolynne: Does that mean you got the job you interviewed for?

Thanks for asking, VeryHappy! Actually, partner called me back to say he was interested and could I def. come in for another interview.

The thing–the job looks like it wouldn’t be very challenging. It would be ‘busy’ (multiple, rapid court appearances) but not analyzing/writing as I’m doing now in temp job (& what I used to do, when I worked before).

Just trying to figure --should he make an offer–in this economy (w/college tuition looming like a freight train!) – could I actually turn it down?

Sorry to derail the clothing thread…

One thing often leads to another, JS,

Thanks, ellen. Had a frantic phone-call w/my law school career advisor (I now call her w/my dilemmas!) and it seems like maybe I should take it.

Back to clothing…got a brand new, knit top from Express at Plato’s Closet ($7!). Plus 2 Hollister shirts for son (didn’t tell him where I bought them).

Does going to court a lot stress you out? If so, maybe not worth it. However, there have been so many law firm lay offs that any job sounds pretty good.

Thanks, missypie. Well, it makes me a bit nervous (when I’m doing something new…) but it certainly looks manageable (10 min Chpt 7 hearings). The thing–it looks too easy (not challenging). Everything straightforward, no legal analysis/research/writing. But, as you said, in this market, maybe I can’t be picky.

Then again, been working so much on this temp job that I haven’t done a ‘blanket the town w/resumes’ – just responding to random Craig’s List postings for jobs.

Sorry to return this to my career discussions!!

Jolynne, I’d take it.

Of course, I’m not employed right now myself. :(

But I have great clothes!!

You could spend your down time learning more about Bankruptcy law…make yourself more useful. I think that bankruptcy lawyers are going to be busy for a little while yet.

Unless there’s a really compelling reason NOT to take the job, it sounds like a great way to ease back into a more permanent position. As was already said, you can bone up on bankruptcy law & be ready to take your career to the next level when it seems appropriate as well. It does sound like the firm is interested in you, which is all good.

I do love the shoes I’ve purchased from Walking Company & Clarks. They’re comfortable & fashionable. One warning: some of them do need a heel guard added so they shoe doesn’t wear out within just a few wearings. I had to have one added after noticing that the shoe was not doing well after being worn less than a dozen times! I was able to get a pair of Clarks shoes at a Comfort Shoes store in Alexandria for $40 (retail price was $120)! I LOVE the shoes & the woman traveling with me also bought a pair–we both LOVE them!

I also love twin sets, as long as the fabric is a nice one (some have a texture I don’t like). They come in a wide range of fabrics, textures and prices. Talbots does have some nice things, but I have rarely purchased anything there, tho my friend does because she loves their petite section.

OK, let’s talk about shoes.

I have become fanatical about getting my shoes repaired – new heels, tips on the sole at the toes, replacing the soles entirely if warranted. I find I can keep an $80 pair of shoes (or less $$$ if I bought them on sale) for years and years by doing this. The only problem is that the shoes go out of style before I have to toss them.

Shoe repairs can be a little pricey but they’re much better than replacing the shoes.

I have a wonderful pair of 10-year-old Salvatore Ferragamos (originallly ~$300 but I got them for ~$125) that I’ve had resoled more times than I can remember.

Without thinking this morning I did the “nice jewelry to dress up jeans” thing. Dark thin jeans, twin set, necklace and earrings with large aquamarines. I almost even wore the dress high heeled sandals, but it’s wet outside.

Missypie, that’s very much what Stacey and Clinton would have you do. I’m doing the same thing today.

I had to look *so hard *for church dresses for my Ds this winter. I couldn’t find a thing with sleeves…all strappy, or at best, little cap sleeves. I had to buy matching sweaters for their dresses, which might have been the point with the retailers.

SO, I just clicked on an email from Delia’s showing their new *summer *dresses - the dress in the big ad is a *long sleeved *shirt dress!!! There are literally more dresses with sleeves in the summer collection than there were in the winter collection.

I don’t get it myself–retailers are just trying to make us nuts!

My friend also frequently has her Salvatore Ferragamos resoled as the tops seem to last forever but unfortunately the bottoms don’t. She always looks perfectly fashionable.

I buy classic flats and generally have the innards of the shoe start to go before I seriously consider dumping them. I’ve found a few brands that are so comfy & I think I’ll stick with them & my Thorlo socks. At this point, I’ve given up on high heels–never could wear them and don’t feel up to starting at this point. I love low heels and flats and they work just fine for me.

D & her friends wear a bit more of a heel but they’re perfectly fine about kicking their shoes off during a fancy dance & putting it under their table & keeping an eye on them & all retrieving them before they leave for the evening. They do a lot of group events, so it’s pretty easy for them to keep an eye on the group “stuff,” they’ve never had things go missing or taken by others.

Thank you very much for the job encouragement! Really appreciate it! Other thing–a few people know the guy who owns this firm & they’ve said he’s not nice to work for. The few colleagues of his I’ve met don’t speak all that well of him. Makes me a little nervous (I’ve been fortunate to work for very, very nice people in the past, for the most part). He’s been nice to me, so far, though.

Going to second interview, anyhow, on Tues, so will spend some time shopping for navy heels to go w/navy ‘second interview’ suit. Sigh.

Thanks again!

Btw, I like the idea re: repairing shoes. Since I can no longer wear the cheapie heels I used to have when working (they have to feel good, now) I’ll end up spending probaby a min of $100. Heel guards & (later) repair sound like excellent ideas!

Jolynne, You might want to take a look at the Nine West Nuncio Pump, available in navy and several other colors on endless.com (an amazon branch) for $68.95 including free shipping and free return shipping. Right now, “order within the next 5 hours 27 minutes and get it Monday” (at least in my zone). I almost never wear heels but have found this particular shoe to be surprisingly comfortable with no break-in required. Other reviewers mention comfort, too. You could order two sizes and send one (or both) back. I have ordered from Endless several times and customer service is excellent. They credit refunds from returns very quickly.

Thanks, zip!!! I’ve learned through exper, tho, that I have to try on. Going off to a party now that’s located near a huge mall w/a Nordstrom’s & Nordstrom’s Rack (plus 9 West, I think). Will look for Nuncio!

Red flag, red flag!!

Take the job **if/b You can overlook his tantrums, or/u this is an area of law you really want to learn, or/u there are promotional opportunities or other opportunities in this firm that you can take advantage of, or/u you desperately need the money right now.

I agree that PEOPLE are very important and if you have other options, it is really good to think carefully about what others have said about working for this individual. If it is uniformly negative, there is a reason and toxic people and situations take their toll. I would carefully explore & consider other options like VeryHappy suggests.

Hubby has not taken several promotions at his workplace because he really enjoys the folks he works for & with and the promotions would require him to work for & with different folks who are hugely dysfunctional and somewhat toxic.
