Here is my neck of the woods, all land is wet…
Builders get really creative to push the boundaries of their lots so only unbuildable lands, i.e., swamps are left. So when you see the the familiar frog and heron NGPA sign, don’t expect that you will be able to stroll through that “wetland.” You will end up like the perp in The Hound of the Baskervilles.
As soon as we bought the place, we got bombarded by builders and realtors inquiring if we want to subdivide. Lol. Unless the codes allow housing on stilts…
So yes, the current plan is to retire in our swamp and buy a condo in HI.
You could call it your “green belt buffer zone”.
The most likely scenario for us is to stay right where we are. We’re in a desert resort area with affordable real estate, and when we moved here last year, we bought our home with an eye toward empty nest / retirement living. We have a single-level, 3 bed/2 bath, 1700 sf condo with an association that takes care of exterior maintenance and landscaping. It’s very lock it and leave it we want to travel (which we do), and it’s highly rentable to snowbirds if we felt like doing that.
We have plenty of excellent dining, entertainment and cultural opportunities within a 10 mile radius, plus a regional airport 15 mins away, and national airports at 1-2 hours distant.
My parents are about three blocks away, inside our same development and in good health. H’s parents are 10 years older than mine and about an hour away.
We have ties to a coastal area about 3 hours away, so there’s a chance we might split our time between that location and this one in 10 years or so, but I think that’s a longshot.
S is headed OOS for undergrad, and it’s way too early to have any clue where he’ll end up.
The CA taxes don’t bother me. We’re used to them, and I like what we get for them.
Our family has timeshares in Lake Tahoe and San Diego, and I love both places. I think I’d eventually get tired of winter in Tahoe, so that one’s good as a travel destination. I could see myself living in San Diego, but moving there is unlikely due to cost. Another good place to say for a few weeks.
Wow. The whole picture sounds amazing. You are very fortunate.
We are very lucky, and grateful for what we have. We’ve had our share of bumps and detours along the way, so we hope our current situation holds.
We are planning on staying put but renting in a lot of different places during the worst of winter. H will retire from state service in 3 years but plans on continuing to work after that. We also don’t need to downsize because we never moved up.
We have no desire to own a second home but might keep my mom’s condo in Florida when the time comes. Good for a cheap getaway and we can see all our friends from here who have winter homes there.
AZ has fresh lemons and olives, BTW.
This has been a topic of conversation lately between my husband and I. We are thinking of selling our business, which would be tricky. My husband wants to potentially buy another business in MD that is similar to ours, and more importantly smaller and much like what he started with originally.
I don’t like the city itself , but the surrounding area is nice. I have been looking at real estate in the area for fun , and the one things that strikes me is the lack of character in the homes. Most have not much land , and I have dogs. They are too contemporary in style for my taste.
I would really just like to downsize and semi-retire…our youngest is mortified that we would consider moving out of state
H and I plan to stay in Charleston. We’re in the process of downsizing to a much smaller one story home. Our current home is on a tidal creek (which I love) but it’s built on a pier foundation so that’s a lot of stairs (tough on my bad knees). Ideally, we’d like to get another home in NC - maybe in the Cashiers/Highlands area - and split our time between the two places.
I’m 99% sure DH and I will stay in our first/only home here in the Houston area. The master bedroom is downstairs, it’s nearly paid for, and it got a good all over cosmetic makeover after a small but smoky fire about two years ago. I’d love to live in Coral Gables FL to be closer to my family, but I don’t think we could afford a house I would like and I don’t like the idea of getting older in an area closer to hurricanes. I’m more concerned about the near term, as my father is holding steady at stage4 and I need to juggle my family, work, resources, and try to get back there.
My MIL retired and moved here soon after we married. Now that 30+ years have passed, that has turned out to be great that we can oversee her care and my children have their grandma all the time.
Our oldest child is starting college in the fall. Perhaps one of them will move to Florida and I can follow them back to my home. I’d be willing to move wherever if they wanted me to in the future. I woke up this morning thinking what needs to be remove from this house and will go buy the Konmari book to begin a serious streamlining.
