The GPA war is really arbitrary and confusing to me.
Is the number more important than the rigor of the classes?
Is a B in second semester junior year really considered a “slipping trend” and therefore worse than a B in the first semester?
I just hear so many versions from so many people. How are they supposed to compare GPAs when high schools classes across the country are so different.

In hs, rigor of the classes is very important if you are getting straight As in BS classes then its not as good as getting As and Bs in the hardest classes in your school.

A trend is not one grade in one class a trend is a more general thing.

They look at the whole picture… they’ll have your grades, your class rank, your course schedule. The regional admissions people will know your high school and how good it is and how to evaluate you based on what they have.

Um, both are bad. The correct answer is to get mostly A’s in the hardest classes.

“Um, both are bad. The correct answer is to get mostly A’s in the hardest classes.”

shut the **** up, “As and Bs in the hardest classes at your school” is bad? not everyone is obsessed with an ivy education, and believe it or not for the vast majority of kids in this country A’s and B’s in AP classes would be a godsend. This is what I truly don’t like about this forum, uptight asses who make statements like it’s bad to get a couple of B’s in AP classes. Grow up and get used to the real world, some people have other priorities than maintaining their precious perfect GPA.

Um, this is the Columbia forum and people are asking how to get into Columbia. They’re obviously obsessed with an Ivy education. We’re talking about the upper crust of American high school seniors who aspire to attend the top colleges, not “the vast majority of kids.”

A’s and B’s means nothing, anyway. What does that mean? 2 A’s and 4 B’s? That’s A’s and B’s. That’s probably not good enough for a top school. 5 A’s and 1 B in the hardest classes? That’s definitely better.

thanks guys. Now I think my question is kind of lame to begin with because it doesn’t set up for a clear answer anyway.
what about the question in the title?
