My little sister is currently going through her college process. I know that there are a bunch of threads about particular schools, but is there one place where I can find all of the information centrally? Which colleges are more likely to respond to negotiations regarding need based or merit based scholarships? I have helped younger friends to negotiate in the past, but I only have experience with a few schools.
No there really isn’t one.
First of all…I would suggest you drop the term “negotiate”. Better to ask for the school to reconsider your financial aid application and award.
Since you know which colleges your sister applied to…call the financial aid departments there…and askmwhat information you would need to submit to have your aid reconsidered. If they give you a lost of what to send…you will have an answer. If the say “we don’t” you will have an answer.
Truthfully, there are SOME colleges that will reconsider your award based on awards PEER schools. And there are schools that won’t even discuss this.
You are in a better position if you have additional information that was not reflected on your FAFSA or Profile forms. Like…a job layoff, or significant ongoing medical bills or something like that.
She is still waiting to hear back from some schools. The reason I ask is because I have had some luck in the past getting additional aid from schools who claimed they wouldn’t reconsider it. This makes me think that what they say on the phone or on their websites isn’t always their policy. I wish there was a more efficient way to figure out which ones are worth the time.
