They have roughly similar academic profiles of incoming freshmen and similar acceptance rates. From a few examples, it’s not fair to assume that there is a high cross-admit rate of UCLA students who applied to USC.

this is not true. I know many people who got into la/cal undergrad but not sc. It might’ve been true a few years ago, but not now.

aurora,

A few examples aren’t a fair look, but I suspect that, based on the average stats of both schools, the cross admit rate is probably pretty high.

worriedsenior: USC admissions are based on politics: who you know, and who you’re related to. UCLA and Cal are based on intellect. They don’t care about legacies or about how much money you have.

vc08,

Do you have any sources to back up this claim? Most stats I’ve seen suggest that USC’s admissions are overwhelmingly similar to UCLA’s.

There is no way in hell I could have afforded to go to UCLA. UCLA is more expensive for OOS than USC, and they never would have given me such generous need-based aid (more than full tuition).

Also, the average family income at UCLA is HIGHER (yes, higher) than that of students at USC. As of right now I can’t find online verification as I’m not sure where I read this (lame I know), but please try to prove me wrong. I’ve been telling people this all summer and if I’m wrong I’ll stop. Fair’s fair.

I hear ya bman, I have OOS tuition for UCLA and am taking out 13k in loans/year. Thankfully I transferred in and only have to do this for 2 years…had I been admitted to both as a freshman I almost certainly would have taken USC bcuz of it’s generous FA (even though I want LA more)

yay another OOSer who chose UCLA over USC! that’s me!
and my mum is still not convinced lol. i always thought i wanted to go to USC but after i thought about it, UCLA’s my school!

^ Well, if you can afford it more power to you. The OOS students who arn’t so affluent will stick with USC.

bump bump bumpetty bump

UCLA and USC may have similar overall admittance rates, but in California, at least at my school, USC is far easier to get in to.

Here is some data for my school (Private, Los Angeles):
UCLA Admit rate: 22% admit rate (269 apps)
USC Admit rate: 43% (210 apps)
UCLA mean admitted GPA: 4.30
USC mean admitted GPA: 4.08

Those stats are from high school seniors over the past 3 years. I got them from a college survey app my school runs. The admit rates are pretty consistent; for each year, USC’s varied 3% and UCLA’s varied 1% from the overall mean.

I assume the difference is due to the makeup of the each college’s student body. Since roughly half of USC students are in-state, the OOS applicants bring down the admit rate. UCLA is 92.8% in-state, so it don’t have many OOS rejections to bring down the admit rate.

That, or USC just really likes rich, private school types.

With regards to the USC vs UCLA enrollment choice, it really is a person to person (individual basis). I did not apply to USC, but I did however considered it.

I would still end up as a Bruin regardless of the outcome, of course, unless USC offers me full scholarship.

In a serious note, though. There is something to the fact that a public university like UCLA can offer its students world-class education - sometimes rivaling or surpassing richer private schools. I feel more indebted to contribute to my alma mater knowing that the state (and federal) government contributed to my success. Consider it paying a good deed forward.

I am a proud Bruin. I take my education seriously. Whatever school you choose, make sure it’s the one that offers you the best possible education, atmosphere and other factors relevant to you.

i remember reading the stats are similar for UCLA and USC somewhere…
but some of my friends in Japan don’t even know USC
well, Asians over-exaggerate how great a school UCLA is
(oh but i love ucla so much)

And the winner for bumping a 3 month old thread is…

Lol, he’s new to the boards and reading these threads for the first time.

Oh man, I’d like to add that UCLA is a WOW school in the area where I live. I’d say that 99% of the people that I come into contact either go to Cal State Northridge or they are going to community college with the intent to transfer to Cal State Northridge.

^ LOL, I went to Cal State Northridge. UCLA is definitely a WOW school on that campus.

The WOW factor also comes from your major. People are impressed when I say I’m a Berkeley grad…but, the real WOW comes when you tell 'em that you majored in something hard…like chemical engineering.

Or biochemistry, I get the wow every time I tell people that, dunno why…

Dude its because you are combining two sciences! Woaaah!

It just sounds more hardcore. Hi, Im a bio Major. Meh. Hi Im a chem major. Meh. Hi I’m a biochem major. WOAH!

ucla is not really a wow university anywhere, besides maybe los angeles? But in all honesty, the school’s “wow” factor is mainly as big as USC’s, due to the fact that its football team is mediocre and thats what gives the school a name. I dont even think UCLA is even a wow university in los angeles, actually. Since the majority of the people i see driving have a ucla license plate, that totally ruins it since its not that selective.
