Where is everyone from???

I like to break the pattern once in while, and this is one of those times…

People who go to Stanford settle, and if they say that Stanford is as good as the ivies they are either willing to settle or have been lied to. I hear it has a better Computer Science than Dartmouth and, granted, it’s close to home… But overall, it falls far short.

Yeah flipchick, I would love to be accepted there too. If I got REJECTED by all the ivies. Which I didn’t, won’t, and never will. :stuck_out_tongue:

Say whatever you want, but Stanford is still my 1st choice school, and I would probably choose it over any other. However, I haven’t visited the college yet so my view might change once I do.

Maybe you should look into UC IRvine, that’s where all the UCLA and UCB rejects go, so if you like those kinds of schools, UCI is a good choice for you.

Also, I hear all the people who never had a chance at the Ivies go to U Chicago, so you might want to look into it too.

I don’t like the school because “that’s where all the Ivy rejects go.” I like it because it is a great college in a wonderful location that I feel is a good match for me. What made you so against Stanford, really? I mean, the word Ivy doesn’t really carry too much significance for me. It’s all about which college you would be the happiest in.

Yeah, that’s what I used to say before I thought about going to the Ivies. Exactly what I used to say… good times, good times.

Don’t get me wrong. I am applying to the Ivies too. I just happen to like Stanford better. There are other non-Ivy schools I love too. One of them is Duke. I would LOVE to go there, although I prefer Stanford.

“Never rains and the weather’s often hot”!!! That’s it! I love it!!! I hate rain and cold.

Tsunami, do you have any specific reason indicating Stanford’s inferiority to Ivy-League schools???

Stanford is ranked top 10 in almost every department in US News rankings, and mostly top 5. Not even Harvard comes close to that.

Stanford’s weather is far superior to that of any Ivy-Leage school

Stanford’s athletics is one of the best in the nation, while Ivy-League athletics is a joke.

Tsunami’s being an a$$ towards Stanford. Many qualified, intelligent people attend the university - and these are people who chose Stanford over the Ivies. Going to an Ivy school doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a better school than a Non-Ivy school such as Stanford. Or else, why would countless organizations/magazines rank Stanford on-par or better than the some/all Ivies?

“Anyway, who’d want to come to Southern California?” -tsunami

First of all, Stanford is nowhere near SoCal. And someone needs to open up their eyes and stop chastising people for their choice in colleges. They are the ones going, not you.

Personally I wouldn’t go to Stanford but that’s only because I’ve been on campus quite a bit and I know that school is not for me. I’m from San Jose and well, I’m applying to UPenn, NYU, USC, Carnegie Mellon, Rice, Claremont McKenna as well as several UC’s which I have yet to decide on. I’m leaning towards business but keeping my options open with some well-rounded schools that for some reason I like. At this point I’m not even sure about college so I’m thinking of taking a year off before I start.

Tsunami:
Having been born and raised in Northern California all my life, I’m pretty sure I’m more knowledgable about the geographical location of Stanford - it’s in NorCal.

That being said, it would be ridiculous to address you by name, seeing that your screenname’s namesake is a ‘tidal wave,’ which usually brings destruction and havoc to coastal regions. I’m sure you will counter this, by saying my screenname “Cash’d” is ridiculous; however, it is inspired by the singer Johnny Cash, who I listen to frequently. Your screenname is a literally a natural disaster - get some originality. The fact is that you have been a negative force in this thread by discouraging students to apply to Stanford and downplaying Stanford’s prestige and inherent academic excellence.

Now, it’s fair to let you criticize Stanford as much as you want. But, you haven’t considered other factors. There are a number of universities, such as MIT, which are better than the Ivies but aren’t part of the Ivy League. Just because a university is not part of the Ivy League doesn’t make it automatically a ‘bad university.’ Empirically, Stanford is equivalent or perhaps better than the Ivies…

Stanford’s current community of scholars includes:
• 17 Nobel laureates
• 4 Pulitzer Prize winners
• 23 MacArthur Fellows
• 21 recipients of the National Medal of Science
• 4 National Medal of Technology recipients
• 224 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
• 133 members of the National Academy of Sciences
• 82 National Academy of Engineering members
• 25 members of the National Academy of Education
• 43 American Philosophical Society members
• 6 Wolf Foundation Prize winners
• 6 winners of the Koret Foundation Prize
• 3 Presidential Medal of Freedom winners

(Stanford.edu)

US News 2005 Rankings place Stanford ahead of 1) Columbia, 2) Dartmouth, 3) Brown, and 4) Cornell.

Tsunami, as ignorant as you may be, you should see that there’s competition in the world. And if you’re unwilling to accept the fact the Ivies won’t always be the best in the world, you’ve got some problems. Using your own argument that “reputations can’t really brought down easily nowadays” seems to be correct. Considering some of the Ivies aren’t as good as Stanford, it appears that their reputations still stand as #1 in your opinion! Even though there may be other good universities, their reputation is hard to bring down. Good job on answering your own argument, Tsunami!

Now, it’s 12:40 AM, and if I had the time, I’d continue, but seeing that arguing with a person like you has justed wasted the past 2 minutes of my time, I’ll bring it to an end.

2 minutes? I’d say you had loads of time since you took so much time hauling out information that I don’t care about. And do you really have to insult my screenname? That’s my name right there. Maybe you should get some originality and not use below the belt sarcasm and blatant mordant insults as rhetoric. Things can be done without your rudeness, you know.

Only people who settle for whatever they get would defend Stanford so feverently. But it’s ok, I don’t want to argue anymore, obviously i’m outnumbered in the “people who settle” department, not to mention the fact that that saying that this or that University is better is kinda pointless especially when people are as stubborn as you. It’s a very objective thing.

Anyway, I didn’t say all the Ivies are better than Stanford, in fact, I think that Stanford can give Dartmouth some trouble’s far as rank goes. Anyway, you misinterpreted me and you shouldn’t be so insulting. You could really hurt someone’s feelings.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Sigh…

I am from India

And, IMHO, I think Tsunami is just bitter because he (she?) knows that no Ivy will let him (her?) in with a 690 writing…
