Where is Sasha Obama going to college?

It’s a really great school and I’m glad you and your kid like it a lot. I was only mentioning how it’s a better value for residents and not as good of a financial bargain for full pay non residents. For example, us Texans have a great flagship with a very low cost of attendance, Michigan is not a great value for Texas kids at full OSS cost.

As a Californian, we have the CSU’s and UC’s, but we thought there was value in going to Michigan. My kid’s friends and roommate from last year were from IL, WY and CO. My kid’s roommates this year are from NJ and FL. Lots of kids from the Chicago area. And typically our local CA HS sends about 8-10 kids a year to UMich.

BTW, a small contingent of 262 kids from TX attend UMich.

That’s a nice number even if we keep in mind that many of them got need based aid or scholarships and it cost less for them or are wealthy enough to not care about cost and few didn’t get into UT Austin. They do have top 10% auto admit cut off. Not to undermine desirability of Michigan. It’s a fantastic school.

Maybe she’s using her TAG of $10k from being a DC resident to bring the price down?

For the record, there’s very little, if any, need based aid or scholarships available to OOS students at Michigan, just like the CA publics.

BTW, anecdotally, there’s a “chance me” thread right now on CC for a TX resident wanting to go to UNC or UMich.

@sushiritto thank you for an anecdote. Texas has more kids in public school system than many states and countries have residents.

The student population here is more than 6.8 million — is in the same ballpark as the total population of Colorado. I have no doubt some apply to or attend Michigan colleges.

As of aid or merit, UM seems to offer it to non residents as well. https://finaid.umich.edu/new-undergraduates/non-resident-students-and-financial-aid/

I wonder why people are more focus on her fashion style at school rther than the course that she is planning to take up?

Offering aid, doesn’t mean getting it. Having read the last 3-4 years of admissions threads here, I can’t recall one OOS student getting need based aid. There were a few merit-based scholarships, but those are rare too.

In any case, depending on your perspective, like mine for example, UMich offers great value. And since 45% (+ 3% international) of the UG student population is OOS, others in great numbers feel the same.

We know Sasha Obama agrees. ?

I’m sure financial aid, affordability, loans, merit scholarships and value were her biggest concerns.

Why wouldn’t value be a HUGE concern? As parents, we’re all concerned about the value of our children’s education. Sasha and the Obama’s could have chosen ANY college in the US or overseas, including Princeton, Michele’s alma mater, or any Ivy or prestigious private school. Michigan offers great value to many OOS parents around the country, the Obama’s happen to agree. ?

This is wrong. You are working off of old information. About three years ago, Michigan really upped its FA game for OOS students. A large part of the Victors campaign is to provide financial aid to OOS students. An entire need-based grant category—the Provost’s Award—exists for OOS students. And Michigan meets full financial need for any OOS family with income less than $90k.

@brantly. Yes this is correct. There are people on the Michigan site stating they are getting between $20-35,000/year from what I saw. I know a few half rides from our high school alone
Know of a few full rides but that was an outside scholarship. There is also the Michigan Grant that is used for OOS kids. They actually also raise the grant as they raise tuition

Thank you for the beatdown gentlemen. ?

This morning what comes to mind is a Class of 2023 poster (yes, one, but a loud one in the deferred thread) here on CC who was comparing OOS financial aid offers between UVa and UMich and was completely unhappy, angry even, with the UMich financial aid award as compared to the UVa offer. From the writing of the poster, I assume that kid matriculated to UVa.

The only beatdown occurring is what Stanley Clarke did on his bass at the Detroit Jazz Festival on Friday playing his iconic “Schools Day’s” album https://g.co/kgs/2Vu57Z
Don’t even get me started on his collaboration with George Duke… ??

To further my point about UMich being an OOS value for this Californian, this SF Chronicle article came out today about UCB, which is our closest UC.

Housing problems, athletics bleeding money, big debt, etc.

Other than the quality of the football team, I’m not seeing any problem affecting an individual student that can’t be solved by spending just a fraction of the $35K difference in tuition cost on a nice apartment.

UVA does not count home equity in the asset calculation. UMich does, but caps it at a multiple of income. There could be other differences as well. Also, you don’t always get the whole story from posters who are angry about their FA award.

Hope the security detail doesn’t have to sit in like every class with Sasha. Wonder if she will go to https://campusinvolvement.umich.edu/article/festifallnorthfest-registration-information

He is not a president any more. Taxpayers shouldn’t have to take care of adult children of former officials. She doesn’t need security but if parents want to provide a private body guard/chauffeur, they have money to pay for it.

@Knowsstuff Is that the correct link? I’m sure the Secret Service will be in every class. The dorm where my kid stayed seemed pretty well secured for normal folk, I wonder how much they increased it, if any. In any case, I’m sure the hysteria will die down after a couple of months. I’m already sick of it.

BTW, my kid sent me a pic of Juwan Howard shopping at the M Den. Being the basketball coach and a former NBA player is more interesting to my kid than the former President’s daughter.

When you’re elected President, the pay isn’t great, but you get a lot of perks. I’m OK with that.
