Where is that colonoscopy thread?

I have tried searching for threads with colonoscopy in the title, but no luck; I also searched for colonoscopy in title or body in the Parent Cafe.

Can any one else find it? As I recall there were many good tips.

Is it this one? There was some discussion of colonoscopy do’s and don’ts in it:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/774229-i-want-hit-my-mil-baseball-bat.html</a></p>

Here’s the title of another colonoscopy thread:

A must read ‘laugh until you cry’ story by Dave Barry

(Sorry I couldn’t make this a link, but you can search for it.)

jeez, leaving yourself open for a rearender:

Its deep in the bowels.
So how deep? So deep that you need a colonoscopy.

Don’t go and blow yourself up over these comments. Its only me passing gas.

Did you want the Obama political forum thread?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe-election-politics/912505-obama-set-poor-example-getting-virtual-colonoscopy.html</a></p>

or the spam thread?

[Why Do I Get So Much Spam About Cleaning My Colon? - College Confidential](http://qa.talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/844333-why-do-i-get-so-much-spam-about-cleaning-my-colon.html)

( instead of using the CC search engine- I used Google)

Okay all you jokers out there–STOP! And to the OP–go ahead and start a new one. It’s been a while and there’s always a new round of just-turned-50ers.

Well, if it’s helpful, I have had about 10, so I have the prep down. I eat lightly 2 days before the procedure. Stock up on jello (not red or orange). The day before I eat eggs for breakfast and lunch, usually yougart in between. Jello for when I feel deprived. I drink a LOT of water and ginger ale. I tend towards unusual reactions to the prep…believe me when I say I have tried everything (great doctor). Mostly just drink the stuff/swallow the pills and want to be left alone. A hot bath can make the whole thing more tolerable. I schedule the actual procedure for first thing in the morning. Dh picks me up, brings me home, heats a large mug of homemade chicken soup with orzo, makes sure I drink at least half and lets me go back to sleep. Gatorade on the nightstand. I tend to sleep most of the afternoon, but Dh wakes me up a few times with more soup, encourages Gatorade. By dinner time, I’m ready for food–and more sleep.

Include me in that group. I began the Dave Berry thread after receiving a link to his article in an email because I thought it was so funny.

I have my annual well-being exam sometime this month or next and know I will be told it’s time for this. Like most, I’m not worried about the procedure; it’s the prep. And I do kind of have a question since I’ve not done it before. I know the diet is very restrictive the day prior, and possibly somewhat restrictive a couple of days prior. However, I’m hypoglycemic and wonder how I’d manage with the restrictions. I’m afraid of what I’ll feel like if I’m limited to just liquids for up to 24 hours prior to the procedure.

Sometimes there is an instruction to abstain from alcohol, but there is no firm reason for this. An Australian study showed that beer for rehydration instead of gatorade and so on is just fine.

^^ I’m not sure drinking alcoholic drinks like beer for rehydration purposes on an absolutely empty stomach is a very good idea.

OK, here’s my tip after having my first one about a month ago. Routine, and all was fine.

After drinking the “unpleasant” mixture and four pills…

I positioned myself in the bathroom, with lap top on a stand! Happened to watch GLEE- not sure why that’s relevant, except it was pleasant entertainment for an hour.

After a few more quick dashes to the bathroom that night, slept quite well.

And, honestly, that procedure, was piece of cake, and this is from needle phobic person, big baby I know.
But, the thought of it was way more intense than any part of it.

(My husband had the huge amount of mixture to drink, and luckily the office switched to four 8 oz glasses , and four pills- husband, said mine was SO MUCH BETTER !!!)

Why is there so much variation in the prep offerings? Why don’t all the docs just offer all the options? Either it cleans you out or it doesn’t. I read about some one taking only pills on one of the old threads, called my docs office and she had to know which doctor I had to know what I could or could not do- why? I checked out a Crohn’s board per a reference on an old thread and they have them every 1-3 years with often a different prep each time. Why can’t we each choose that prep we think will work best with our bodies?

I think I will try fasting/liquid for 2-3-4 days before and see if that works well…I’ll let you know ;)

I turn 50 in a couple of weeks and my wife has informed me that I WILL be scheduling this right away. Thanks for all the pointers about the prep!

I did that and I think it worked fairly well although I don’t have the experience of eating normally up to the last minute permitted to compare it to. My theory was probably the same as yours - less stuff that needs to be cleaned out and therefore an easier time of it.

For me the worst part was drinking the ton of liquid. I made it through it without regurgitation but I sure was glad when I was done with it.

Same here. The actual procedure turned out to be nothing - they hooked up the IV, told me they were going to inject the medication and that I’d feel a little light headed for a few seconds then fall asleep. That’s what happened - I felt the light headedness for just a brief amount of time then I woke up after it was all over. That was it. I’m about due for another one and won’t be so nervous this time.

A few years ago my hubby and many of his colleagues hit the big 5-0. One day several of them were in D.C. getting ready to drive back home (north of Baltimore) and one guy says, “I have my colonoscopy tomorrow. I think I’ll drink that stuff before we head back.” Fortunately for all of them, they did not let him do it.

^^ Funny one. It might make for a comic segment in a movie.

And when my husband was in for his, he woke up and who was on the next gurney but one of his old college football buddies. They also work together now.

When I had the first one they didn’t put you to sleep so I got to watch! It was actually pretty cool as it was all on a TV screen within my sight. However now they seem to put everybody out. I guess I asked too many queestions.

While I eat lightly the 2nd day before a procedure, I definately eat. I get too light headed otherwise. The whole thing is easier with a lighter menu for a couple of days, but you do need to eat something. The prep is much easier now than it was even 6 or so years ago. Love those pills.

I have found a lighter menu after the procedure is helpful, too.

I asked not to be put to sleep and it was very intriguing to watch. They still give you some sort of mild sedative/pain killer so the recovery was easier. They found 5 polyps and 3 of them were pre cancerous. The doctor told me that if I would have delayed even one year that I could have been in trouble. Please make your appointments…not fun, but necessary. Don’t we all want to be around for the big college graduation!
