Thanks for the response. My S is on a schedule that he made himself to get all applications done by the end of the month. He is almost there as he has now submitted 11 of 17. This will enable him a little time to clean up and prepare his auditions. I am trying to help a little but am mostly acting as a sounding board. The college application process is so unusual for a theatre/musical theatre kid that we both feel a little isolated. Thankfully, he LOVES what he does and he is eager to continue doing it. This passion, which is so rare in a kid, makes the entire thing a little easier. Theatreguy, what school did you end up at? Did you have some choices? We are scheduling 2 schools a day at unifieds and going to both Chicago and NY. A few schools require an on campus audition so…Following is a list of the schools he is applying to. Any feedback is always welcome. Again, thanks for the support. I love CC.

University of Michigan
NYU Tisch
Carnegie Mellon
Penn State
University of Oklahoma
University of Miami
UCLA
USC
Otterbein
Texas State
Elon
Northwestern
Syracuse
Pace
Emerson
Boston

Theatreguy321: I am new to the site and posted a response to your response in the wrong place! Just wondering, after applying to 18 schools, did you have several choices? Did you do any on campus auditions? I am also curious where you ended up. Are you pleased with your choice? I am so happy to have some people in the same boat to talk to about this process. Thanks.

Fullhouse, you might be interested in this thread from last spring:

Class of '11 Theatre Acceptance Thread

In it, Theatreguy321 and others discuss what schools they applied to, where they were accepted, and the reasons they chose to attend the schools they did.

Perhaps you have discovered that you can use the “search this forum” function (upper right hand corner of the main page of the forum that lists the threads) by entering the name of the school that you are seeking information about.

You can also click on a the member’s name, where it is displayed in blue to the left of their post, and find choices that include a list of previous posts by that person.

There are vast riches in this forum’s archives.

I’m glad you have discovered us! This forum has helped so many of us immensely. Best of luck to you and your son.

Fullhouse, I’m sorry that the decisions thread did not show up as a link in my last post. I seem to have forgotten how to insert a link to a thread! :(

You could find it by going back through the list of threads by date. It was started on 3/3/11.

“Class of '11 Theatre Decisions Thread” is the thread I meant to reference, although the other one is interesting too. I apologize for the confusion!

Fullhouse - I ended up at The University of the Arts, which was one of my top choices =). I love it here, the school is basically everything I could’ve asked for! I’ll certainly admit, every school has its ups and downs though, UArts included. I had a good range of choices too, 9 schools I think in the end. For on campus auditions, I actually only auditioned at Elon and had callbacks at Western Michigan University. Besides that I just visited either before or after the auditions to get a feel for the school/program.

NJTheatreMom- Thank you so much for the hint. I actually didn’t realize you could search the site that way. I really have found this entire site so helpful. My S is busy rehearsing, studying, writing essays, working with his vocal coach, dance lessons etc…he is too busy to be worrying about audition results. I, on the other hand, am worried all the time so having a group of people that have either been through this or are going through this, helps enormously. Thanks.

Fullhouse, we’ve all been there! Feel free to come here and ask questions and share your concerns (and, hopefully, your son’s happy results!) any time.

Many of us have learned so very much from reading through the archives of this forum. It is a treasure.

You mentioned dance lessons and a vocal coach. I am wondering if your son is applying anywhere for Musical Theatre, or if he is just auditioning for Acting programs?

If he’s applying to MT programs, you might want to visit the CC MT forum as well as this one.

I would like to second the suggestion for the readers of this forum to check out the Musical Theatre forum as well. Even though my daughter is planning to audition for Acting not MT, we have found a lot of good info there, especially in the school-specific sections. We have found it especially full of info on the audition process at the different schools, even the Acting specific auditions.

It has been a blessing to have this site as I have been trying to support my D by doing research about particular programs and the audition process, while she focuses on ALL those essays, her current show and the ongoing school work. I think we have finally finalized her list of schools (8) to which she will apply and now she can start finishing up those applications…she plans to send in a couple of Early Action ones this weekend. What a relief it will be for her to hit that Submit button!

It’s going to be a busy 6 months! Good luck to you and your son, fullhouse!

My S is auditioning for several MT and several T programs. The truth is he loves both so much and he has decided to audition for any program that seems interesting to him and then see where he gets in. He has strongly considered both and is having some trouble deciding which is a better fit. He has so much stage singing experience that he often says maybe straight acting would be a more challenging and beneficial route. If he went in that direction, he would keep a vocal coach. He has a lot of decisions to make. In the meantime, I went on the MT forums. As usual, there is a LOT of food for thought. As of tonight, S has 11 applications in and only a handful more to go. It will be so great when this part is done and he can focus on the audition for a little while.

Fullhouse, are any of your son’s schools non-audition schools? I’m not familiar with Texas State so perhaps that is his non-audition safety that he’d be happy to attend? If that’s not the case, then I strongly recommend that he find one or two academic and financial safety schools that he likes. The rest of the schools on his list are very selective and no one should count on getting into any of those. There’s a discussion in the MT forum about the number of schools applicants should have on their list, it’s worth a read. A longer list does not necessarily increase the acceptance odds. No one should have to apply to 17 schools. An appropriate list of schools should result in an acceptance or two. Without knowing your son’s qualifications and academic stats, it’s impossible to comment as to whether or not this is an appropriate list but there are several schools on his list that require a strong academic component in addition to a strong audition.

fullhouse - My D had both Acting and MT acceptances at the end of her auditions which was nice to have. I do know that Elon required an application for Acting and an application for MT which was something that slipped by us during the process. Just a heads up to double check if your S is interested in both. Best of luck!

KellyLJ1: have you looked at North Carolina School for the Arts or Southern Methodist.
Students from my D’s arts HS have gone to both and been very happy (and wram)

Thtre12, both great recommendations. NCSA looks fabulous, but we are looking for more of the whole college experience as opposed to a school that only offers arts programs. We did talk about both SMU and TCU. Her dad and I both grew up in Texas in the DFW area and we still have lots of family there, so her grandparents would love that. She, however, feels like that is farther than home than she wants to go. As we get closer to this decision, it seems like she is becoming more and more clear that she wants to be within driving distance, even if that drive is 8+ hours. With this being by first to leave the nest, that is just fine with me

With all the fabulous schools out there, I am thrilled that she is starting to articulate some definite preferences so that we can narrow down the choices. I think that we have settled on the following mix of BA and BFA, public and private, really selective and more accessible, audition and non-audition programs. Any feedback is appreciated:

In state
JMU (Early Action)
VCU
William and Mary
UVA

Out of state
American
Emerson (Early Action)
Carnegie Mellon
Wake Forest

alwaysamom- My S also applied to Norhtwestern which is not an audition based program. He has a 4.2 weighted GPA with a 31 on his ACT so he does have strong academics. I agree that this is a very selective list. I will discuss adding a school or two that are not audition based with him. My sense is that he will get into one of the schools that he auditions for but that is based on past success in the field and it certainly is not a guarantee. I appreciate your feedback and am going to go and read the other thread.

glassharmonica- My S is in the middle of the application process and we feel as overwhelmed as you do. I couldn’t relate more to your thread. We are a get things done family also and yet he is still trying to complete the process. One step forward, two steps back. My S is applying to 17 schools and only one is non audition based. I completely understand the difficulty you are facing. Good luck to you and your daughter.

So, I have officially made my list. I’ve tried to get both non-audition and audition. BA’s and BFA’s as well as conservatory/ liberal arts. I honestly do not know which I would like better. I love every school I’m applying to and would be happy to go there though.

Audition:
NYU
Pace
Fordham
Marymount Manhattan
Point Park
UNCSA
UCLA
Chapman
USC (possibly)

Non-audition:
Connecticut College
American University
Sarah Lawrence
Columbia College Chicago

That’s my official list. I have pretty strong academics (in all AP/honors classes, NHS, etc) and I’m getting monologue work from a private acting coach. All of my applications have been turned in (except for UNCSA and Sarah Lawrence, and USC) and I’ve been academically accepted to Point Park and Marymount Manhattan already. Now, I’m focusing solely on my monologues and have been working them! I just can’t wait for it to be March and this is all over!

Well my son is done (I think). We submitted common apps and regular apps yesterday. He was terrified to push the submit button - no sure why but the finality of it got to him…go figure.

Here’s his list:
Marymount Manhattan
Pace
Fordam
NYU
Columbia College
Hunter College

Because his agent is in Manhattan he hopes to go to school there and still be available for auditions. At least that is his hopes. Who knows what school auditions will hold for him. Fingers crossed that there will be some acceptances at the schools he’s auditioning for if not prayers that he gets into Hunter College.

Good Luck to everyone… I finally get a break next year. Whoopie…I did this in 2009 with a dd that only did ED at NYU - Thankfully she was accepted at Tisch Film/TV - the one school thing about put me over the edge but hey we knew by Dec 15th I think. Then I did it last year 2011 - 4 in state applications for my second child and accepted at all…My next child doesn’t start HS until next year so I’ll have quite a lull…

I’m jealous that you’re finished! My daughter still has a while to go. Applications finished at Temple, BU, CMU, Emerson, Juilliard, Fordham, Rutgers. But SUNY Purchase not started yet. Then some LACs-- Sarah Lawrence, maybe Barnard, maybe Bard, maybe Vassar. Also maybe Tisch. Maybe Penn. I’m wondering when we will run out of steam. She got her first acceptance yesterday, to Temple, which felt good.

This is my first time saying anything on college confidential! So i hope this gets posted:)
Anyway, this website has helped me so much and i finally decided to get an account. To CollegeMom,NotMamaRose, austinmtmom, and other moms who may not even be on here anymore OMG, thank you so much, you’ve answered almost all of my questions about college.except some…

And now im gonna ask my first question:)
When is the audition for Temple’s theatre major with acting concentration (not musical theatre) ? In your sophomore year?freshman year?before? And is their program in theatre just as great as i keep hearing about their musical theatre?

Also, i wanted to know from current students that went out of state to a University known for its rigorous training program in acting, either BA or BFA, what i should be prepared to face, after hopefully making it in:) thanks!
