Me too. D missed the likely cutoff so it sort of dropped from our list anyway, but I’d be a lot sadder about that if it was still full tuition.

@maynardgkrebs, it is what it is. If we lived 2 hours south of here D would have surely made NMSF. As it is she will likely be commended. I don’t have a problem with that. Certain areas of the country would hog all the spots if they didn’t do it the way they do.

What’s wrong with that? Do you think someone should be punished because of where they live?

MK, hijacking the thread? Rather off topic.

It’s really not a question of “fairness” or “punishment.” NMSC is a private corporation. It can designate NMS Finalists by whatever arbitrary criteria it wants. Colleges are free to give or not give merit-based aid based on NMS Finalist designation.

While I agree with celeste, I’ll respond that some kids are already punished for where they live, in terms of the quality of their schools. And it’s not like our country doesn’t have a tradition of states having influence beyond their population or other attributes (been helping my kid with AP Gov this year…) Perhaps MK can start a new thread on this topic., I’d be glad to participate there.
