I would guess school name, total NMS, Paid Merit Scholarship, Non-scholarship</p>

<p>I am guessing total NMS, merit scholarships sponsored by the school, merit scholarships sponsored by NMSF or others. If only two numbers are listed, I would guess that the school does not sponsor the scholarships, and finalists would have to be sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation or by a parent’s employer. So, the numbers at, say, Harvard, are not comparable to the numbers at University of Alabama, since I would guess that many more Harvard students would have been listed had Harvard sponsored these scholarships.</p>

<p>A more useful chart (for those who would be impressed by the numbers of students scoring well on one morning’s test, including those who walk in with preparation that has sometimes lasted for years AND those who have not prepared at all) would list the number of National Merit Finalists, IMO, since many schools do not sponsor National Merit Scholarships.</p>

<p>If there are two numbers listed, that may mean different things, depending on the placement of the commas.</p>

<p>The above examples probably mean that 4 total NMFs went to Bryn Mawr, all 4 of whom did not receive Bryn Mawr scholarships for NMF status (though they may have received outside scholarships for NMF status). But 7 total NMFs went to Louisiana Tech, all 7 of whom did receive Louisiana Tech scholarships for NMF status.</p>

<p>The most useful information imho is the listing of schools that offer significant scholarships to NMFs. The NMSF subforum is a great resource for that.</p>

<p>Yes, these numbers can be misleading. In NMS-speak, “National Merit Scholars” are National Merit Finalists who get a scholarship. At some schools, every National Merit Finalist automatically qualified for a scholarship from the school. So at the University of Alabama, for example, there were 123 National Merit Scholars, of whom 111 got their scholarships from the school itself, and only 11 got National Merits Scholarships from sources other than the school (i.e., the National Merit Scholarship Corporation or various corporate sponsors). In contrast, at Yale there were 178 National Merit Scholars, not a single one of whom got their scholarship from the school; all got scholarships from the NMSC or corporate sponsors.</p>

<p>So if one succeeds in being designated a National Merit Finalist, where would one go for scholarship dollars? I saw the long list of corporations that sponsor these students for scholarships, so do we contact them directly and apply? </p>

<p>Many of the school’s on my child’s app list do not offer these scholarships. Maybe it’s just us being bogged down with all the college research stuff, but I think the material explaining the National Merit Program is not really all that straight forward. We find ourselves digging for information on what the next step is. I think the big lag between getting qualifying results and hearing anything from them might be the issue.</p>

<p>Also I find it odd that the lack of an asterisk on your score sheet is the method by which you determine if you qualify. Why not just make a written notation? </p>

<p>bclintock, from the UNC-Chapel Hill current bulletin, finance page: “UNC–Chapel Hill no longer participates in awarding scholarships to incoming students in recognition of their National Merit finalist status.” I don’t think Cornell does either. Any university that sponsors official NMSC awards will have them listed in the pages of the report. </p>

<p>There are schools that give automatic NMF money that don’t participate in the NMSC official awards so that it doesn’t appear. For example, our flagship, UW-Madison, gives up to 5 of the small official awards, which show up. Additionally, they have an automatic scholarship for freshmen NMF in-state only on the order of $7,000 non-renewable. Not sure why part of it isn’t broken out as official award like the money for the 5. The larger scholarship is not university money, like the 5. It comes from some foundation or private donor’s fund. Maybe because it’s for in-state only? I asked someone in FA/scholarships once but didn’t get an actual reply that one could parse and make sense of.</p>

<p>I assume Drexel has something similar going on. Or do they not offer that full tuition scholarship anymore??</p>

12 got “official” NMF merit from either Corporate or NMCorp</p>

<p>But all got the “non official” NMF big award from the school.</p>

<p>99% of corporations only give their awards to their employees’ children who are NMF. There are one or two corporations that need some unique majors and they will give their few awards to the few kids who will major in those odd majors. </p>

<p>So, if you have a parent who works for one of those companies, your parent needs to contact HR and see if there’s something that has to be done (form filled out, etc).</p>

<p>That is for the 2012-13 freshman class, though I agree it looks incorrect. Alabama reports 241 scholars in that entering class. Alabama has over 600 currrent national merit scholars.</p>

<p>It was the ill-fated attempt to reduce the scholarship, I expect. Numbers should go up for 2014 entering class as the scholarship was increased. </p>

<p>I want to see what happens to NEU’s # this year.</p>

<p>The system is flawed because of the state qualification. I.E. it is much harder to be a finalist from some states than from others.</p>
