Where, Oh Where Should I Apply?

I have formed a list of places I’m considering applying to, so I can start the application process. Please make suggestions of places I should add or delete from the list based on what I want in a college.

What I want:

A small-medium sized school in a medium sized city, suburb, or in its own community in a big city somewhere in the Midwest or South. Preferably I want to go to a liberal arts university, but I’m interested in non-liberal arts private universities or even a good public university. I plan to major in Marketing so a good business school/program is a must and I might double major or minor in Sociology. The biggest thing I want is a friendly student body, with a real comradery among students. Greek life and partying aren’t important, but I’m not against pledging a sorority and I would like to get my head out of my books and hang-out with friends once in a while. I want to be challenged by my professors and reach my full potential, but not to the point I’m miserable. I would also like get good merit scholarships (I’m not rich but I don’t think I’d qualify for need-based scholarships).

Schools on the List:

-William and Mary (My favorite so far! I really love it, but would be applying as an out-of-stater.)
-University of Richmond (Liberal Arts University, beautiful campus, and I heard they have an awesome marketing program. Anyone know more about them?)
-Washington University in St. Louis (I honestly don’t think I can get in. I did a big school report on WUSTL and sent my SAT and ACT scores there, but didn’t care much for the campus when I saw it.)
-Texas Christian University
-Southern Methodist University
-University of Texas in Austin (Sort of a safety. I really don’t want to go somewhere the size of UT, but the reputation of their business school and my guaranteed acceptance, unless the Texas legislature changes the law, keeps it on the list.)
-Texas A&M University (Safety. Good business school and I like their student body more than UT’s. A really good friend is going there in the fall and trying to convince me to attend.)
-Texas Tech University (Safety. Would probably offer me really good scholarships for being an IB diploma candidate but maybe a little too close to home.)

Thoughts?

Looking at your list of contenders, not sure if you’d want to be this far north, but Bradley University in Peoria, IL seems to fit many of your criteria. About 5K undergrads, city over 100K (metro area nearly 400K). A liberal arts-type college, but with good business and engineering schools. Greek life pretty strong, but not overwhelming. Lots of interaction between profs (they do all the teaching) and students. With your stats, I think you’d get decent FA, and the school is relatively inexpensive without it.

Don’t have much firsthand knowledge about most of the other schools on your list, tho obviously W&M is a very good school - I can certainly understand that being your favorite. Good luck with your search!

Thanks Knowitsome! I’ll definitely look into Bradley University. Does anyone else have suggestions?

Bradley is one of the most boring campuses I’ve ever witnessed. Plus you’re probably too smart to go there.

My sister goes there and I always dread visiting and stuff. There’s honestly nothing to do, besides like frat parties on the weekends. Plus you’re really close to a rough/ghetto part of Peoria.

Haha, good to know.

I looked into U of Richmond and I like it a lot. It seems like an excellent school, and I know those students with excellent stats have a chance to get their tuition paid. I think they give out around 50 or so? I’m not positive though.

To get some more information about that school, I’d check out their section on this website, because one of their Admissions Officers actually had an account here and provided some great information! G’luck!

Thanks mike0515! I’ve heard great things about U of Richmond so far, it seems to have a lot of the things I want. It’s nice to know that one of their Admissions Officers had an account on CC and that they offer good scholarships.

Without a doubt, looking at your profile, University of Richmond would be a very nice match.

I really enjoyed my visit there, and I generally wouldn’t even be interested in a smaller university.

University of Richmond is a great place! I highly recommend it and with your stats, it is a great match for you!

PS: Jacks Mannequin rules =]

I think you should look very closely at Denison University in Ohio. Gorgeous campus designed by the landscape architect who designed Central Park. Close-knit faculty-student interaction, very caring. Greek life is there but you don’t have to join to have fun. A not-too-small LAC. Sounds nearly perfect for you and you might get some merit aid there.

[Denison University - Granville, Ohio - 1-800-DENISON](http://www.denison.edu/)

Wake Forest is a good fit. But to get merit aid anywhere your qualifications will need to be well above the 90th percentile for that campus.

Thanks wittywonka and teamfrangela92! Univesity of Richmond is amazing and it looks like a great match for me. I’m glad you knew the meaning of my user name teamfrangela 92. Jack’s Mannequin is one of my favorite bands :D

Denison sounds great jazzymom! Thank you for the suggestion.

Gadad-Thanks for the info about merit aid. A friend has suggested Wake Forest as well. From what I know about Wake Forest I think it would be a good fit.

More opinions? How much of a reach would W&M be for me?

How about Vanderbilt?

IRT your question about Wm and Mary, you should go to the forum for that college. Click on Colleges to the left of the screen and then go to the college list under “W” and you will find several threads discussing OOS applicants and their chances. Good luck on your search.

Okay thanks jazzymom. Vanderbilt would definitely be on the list, but they don’t have an undergraduate business program.

bump bump bump

How much did you dislike the WUSTL campus? If you really couldn’t see yourself there, I’d recommend not applying, which would just be wasting the fee.

Does Rice have an undergrad business major/program?

The Gothic style is kinda overwhelming to me, I didn’t realize it was going to be so prominent. I’m very impressed with the school, but I don’t think it’s the right place for me. I don’t think I’ll end up applying to WUSTL. Rice offers business minors, but not majors to undergrads. Another amazing school, but I don’t care much for Houston.

DePaul is very nice, good business, good sociology, many other good programs, a fun school in a fun neighborhood of Chicago. Large for a private school but not enormous. An academic safety for you, I think.

Thanks MidwestMom2Kids_!
