D is traveling solo to London to complete some research on a grant from her college. She has never stayed alone in a foreign city before, although she has traveled quite a bit. She was thinking that she would be best served in a single room in a youth hostel, and found one in Picadilly, but I wasn’t sure how safe a neighborhood this would be. If anyone has suggestions for a specific hostel or bed and breakfast, or even ideas as to which neighborhoods would be safe and central and which others to avoid, it would be very helpful. She will be there for approx. two weeks in summer.

Where will she be doing her research? My S spent 9 weeks in London 2 summers ago with an internship through Imperial College. The college had rooms that students can rent. It was very expensive and eventually we went on Craigslist and found him a room that he sublet from another student who left London for the summer.

Picadilly is a good and generally safe area.
My D spent 10 weeks in London at the London School of Economics and I found a dorm room for her (Northumberland House) in Trafalgar Square where it is close to the school , centrally located and very safe.

my d stayed at pickwick hall in bloomsbury; very nice hostel w/kitchen facilities. (i recommend booking early, they fill up quickly.) she also stayed in the bird’s nest, which made me a bit anxious (outside of london, over a bar that blared punk-rock), but she met some lovely people; one never knows!

pickwick hall is about 3 minutes from the british museum, though, which was perfect for her.

Thank you all! Very helpful!
