Where should I apply for a good Computer Science program?

First of all my grade aren’t exactly the best. I have a 3.1 UW gpa but my weighted is a 3.61. The school I go to is one of the best in my state (Tennessee) so i’ve really only taken honors and AP courses. I have a 28 as my best on the ACT so far, but i’m going to take it again. My ECs are Model UN, YIG, Varsity Debate, soccer freshman year, tennis sophomore and junior years, 150 hours volunteer work, and i interned at a research lab at Vanderbilt and got a nice rec from my mentor :). I really just want to know which schools that I could get into have the best computer science programs since thats what i feel like i’ll be doing for the rest of my life. I will also have to pay for college entirely by myself so i’ll end up taking out a loan but i get a 70% discount on my tuition since one of my parents works at Vanderbilt. I just want to know which colleges i should look at that I would have a chance of getting into that also have a nice CS program.

Since money is the most important criterion for attendance, please clarify with your parents that the Vanderbilt tuition perk applies to any college you go to. I’ve never heard of such a thing, but I’m frequently surprised by my ignorance. :P

The schools will expect m&d to pay whether they want to or not. If they don’t pay, you’re stuck with the costs. Even should you get a 70% tuition discount, how will you pay for the other 30% of the tuition, plus another 13-18K in room, board, fees, books, travel, clothing, health insurance, etc.? You can only borrow $5500 your first year, and 27K total for four years. So push this problem to the top of your to-do list.

You can run SuperMatch (in the left column on this page) and figure out which schools you have a shot at. There are hundreds. You need to do the research to narrow down and come up with a list. Then come back to us.

Do you like Vanderbilt ? Do you want to apply ED there? I’ve seen students with 3.2 uw GPA applied ED and got in.

^^^

That would be rare…and would require some unique hook. Vandy is an ivy-alternative school.

Does that benefit apply to OTHER schools? or only Vandy? If it can be used at other schools, how much would you be given to use at another school?

YOU CAN’T borrow the rest. YOU can only borrow $5500 for frosh year. To borrow more (which is very risky) would require your parents to QUALIFY and co-sign those loans every year. Will they do that? Most parents won’t do that because their credit is hurt with each co-sign.

How likely is that today, @DrGoogle? The percentage of students who in 2013-14 were admitted with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.24 was 2.9%. You can bet that many of those with low GPAs were students with hooks. I don’t think it’s a good idea to suggest to OP s/he has a reasonable chance at Vandy when maybe there’s an ED school that better matches OP’s record.

I looked it up and it is supposed to apply to any college that i wish to attend.
<a href=“Dependent Tuition Assistance | Policies | Human Resources | Vanderbilt University”>http://hr.vanderbilt.edu/policies/dependent-tuition-assistance.php</a></p>

Ohhhhh. Did NOT know supermatch existed. Thanks!

Not last year but a few years back somebody reported on CC. When I have time, I’ll find it. But I’m glad to see that the tuition assistance is not just for Vanderbilt.
I think Chaosakita also had low GPA, not stellar GPA(3.4-36 uwGPA) and she got accepted to Vanderbilt in RD round. Her parents also work at Vanderbilt.

working at Vandy seems to bring all kinds of benefits to the children of the workers.

If you think about it, it makes some sense for a private with such generous benefits to be incented to take in a kid, because if he goes elsewhere, Vandy would pay another school real money. At Vandy, it’s one more student who won’t be contributing that much, but it’s not real money going out.

I’m thinking of a screen name WaitingForIvy or something similar but I can’t google for anything on that name. I think I must have wrong spelling somewhere. Sorry, I can’t find it.

Chaosakita didn’t have a low GPA

The OP here has two negatives…a low GPA and a low test score (low for Vandy). Unless he has a tremendous hook beyond being a child of an employee, I doubt Vandy is going to accept him.

I imagine that those 2.9% that were accepted to Vandy with low GPAs are star basketball or football players or similar.

it sure would be nice to know the outcome of this one, mom2; I’m taken with @PurpleTitan‌’s #9 and wonder if this student will be accepted for those kinds of reasons. The employee would be happy and quite possibly still have that 70% discount if the student has to drop out of Vandy. Everyone wins (except the student if s/he drops out). There is that sticky moral obligation of the AO to the applicant, or not.

Obviously if you get into Vanderbilt, that would be a good option. Let’s look at some scenario if you don’t get in.

You would be responsible for 30% of tuition plus room plus board plus other expenses. Let’s just look at tuition room and board.

You can only borrow I believe $5500 by yourself. Therefore you also need a merit scholarship which isn’t likely forthcoming. Would your parents co-sign loans for you.

Some examples that are feasible:
Purdue: OOS Tuition 28,804. Your share of Tuition: 8641.2 Room and Board: 10,300. Your total $18941.

You are looking at on the order of $80K of debt when you graduate. That’s rather high.

UTennessee-Knoxville: IS Tuition: 11876. Your share $3562.80. Room amd Board: 10296. Your total $13858

Still a lot to borrow, but better.

Why are your parents not paying for your college?

I never said I wanted to go to Vanderbilt and I know I wouldn’t get in if i applied…i just wanted to know which colleges in the Southeast region have a respectable CS program that i could get into.

I really don’t know why they won’t. They’ve just made it extremely clear that if I go to college they won’t be paying for any of it. So how exactly can I work this out?

Each year at a 4yr school will cost you 14-35K per year at any of these schools. you can only borrow 5500, so yo cannot go to any 4yr without significant help from your parents.

I’m not even sure that going to a cc is going to be that much help.
