Where should I apply?

Hi,
I’m already applying to stanford rea ( w/ a gpa of 3.98, sat: 2180 [700CR 690M 790W], some focused ECs, and URM status: AA) but I’m realistic about my chances of acceptance since admission top colleges is pretty much a craphshoot.

Unfortunately, I’m not really sure where else to apply. I have some safeties but no matches or other reaches. One of the most important aspects I look for in a college is need-based financial aid since my family makes less than 25,000 a year. Does anybody have any ideas? I’m just trying to make a list because I have to start applying soon and my counselor wanted me to submit a list months ago and I have yet to do so because I literally have no idea what to put on it.

Also, I have another quick question: my father never went to college, and my mother went to college in Africa, so neither of my parents have ever attended a college in the US. Is that a hook?

Thanks ahead of time.

I’m pretty sure even if your parents went to college in another country, you still aren’t considered a first-generation college student… Don’t quote me on that, though.

That being said, I’m assuming you’re black/African, so that SAT score would definitely be acceptable for you, especially since I read elsewhere that you had a 3.9 UW GPA and have pretty good (though a tad generic) ECs. You could get into Stanford, so… Good luck!(:

Now, need-based… Stanford’s in California, and so is Pitzer College, and Pitzer meets full need… So does Occidental and most colleges in the Claremont Consortium (I know Pomona does, maybe all do?), so consider those too. You’d probably be in at Pitzer and Occidental… The others are a bit more reachy, though if you applied to all, you’d get into a number of them.

As for the East Coast… Georgetown meets full need, so does JHU and Trinity College… You’d probably be in at Trinity, and you have a pretty good shot at the others. Oberlin’s not too selective but still a great school, and it meets full need too. You might also consider Tufts too, though it’s somewhat reachy.

Besr of luck!(:

Thanks Elikresses, I just checked out the Claremont colleges and I think I’ll apply to Pomona and Claremont Mckenna. I think I’ll apply to Georgetown too. Does anybody else have some ideas?

If its any incentive, I’ll chance people who reply

Without knowing the type of school you want it is very hard to give you suggestions. Also applications aren’t due for months, so I don’t know why you said this “because I have to start applying soon”. Anyways, if we are just throwing schools out that are in CA or academically on par to Stanford try Pomona, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Swarthmore, Williams, Amherst, Columbia, Brown, John Hopkins, Cornell, Duke, MIT, Princeton etc. etc. Try searching on collegeboard for the types of schools you want, or look at lists online of schools that meet 100% of need.
