Congrats on your great GPA!
Frankly, if your parents want to pay no mor ethan $5000 while earning over $100,000 your best chances will be either in state schools--UVA; VA Tech, etc--or schools which award large merit grants to help diversity their student bodies. Unfortunately, engineering is not offered as many of the fine small colleges which would give you lots of money. Consider UPenn; Lehigh; Bucknell; RPI; Lafayette; Worcester Poly; Rochester Tech.

yabeyabe2 - what schools would you recommend for someone with similar stats that is not interested in engineering that would give good merit aid?

If you get your SAT up, you can probably get a solid amount of financial aid. Take a look at some state schools like UNC or UVA, but also apply to an ivy or two as reaches. I wouldn't apply to many private universities unless it's a definite in, because whats the point of applying and gaining admission if you won't have the money to attend.

Ok...folks...this young lady needs some help finding some schools...

she needs either lots of merit of lots of FA

Parents earn over $100k but can only pay $5k
so...maybe only FA at top schools who, but her stats are a bit low for those.

The problem will be that her parents can pay their EFC which will likely be - at least - $25k per year.

Who can come up with some good suggestions....

I'm thinking maybe ....

RPI might want more women - especially women of color - so possible nice offer.

I am desperate so thanks everyone! Any help is appreciated.

I think I can get my SAT up or also maybe I will do better on the ACT.

Not sure if I can do much more with my other stats.

Any help or suggestions of schools that would help with merit aid is appreciated.

I am even open to choices of majors, I just do not want to take loans over 10k a year if I can help it. $40k at the end of 4 years is the most I am willing to borrow.

My parents will not cosign so what is the most that I can borrow on my own?

Have you posted on the African American students forum? They might have some ideas. I recall a CC poster named Plainsman reporting his daughter receiving very generous aid from--and really liking--Muhlenberg and Oberlin.
You might also consider Alfred, an excellent school in New York, and Goucher, a excellent college in MD.

In Va have you checked out Roanoke and James MAdison?

I am open to any area of the country honestly. Money is the real issue.

I am also looking at engineering or a law degreee, still undecided. But leaning more towards law so I just am looking to get into a solid undergraduate program.

Alcoholics Anonymous? Geez, keep that to yourself.

I'd focus on in-state public universities. Virginia has some good ones. UVa, Virginia Tech, George Mason.

Also consider a small, private liberal arts college that grants merit scholarships. Many good ones are in the Midwest. Check out the website of the ACM (Associated Colleges of the Midwest). These are excellent schools, but their SAT medians tend to run a little lower than the New England colleges.
