Where should I look for a used car under $1000?

How can I test the engine and trans with 0 knowledge in cars?
I’m a student and on a tight budget so I’m looking for a cheap car with no major problems. Is that possible lol.

try craigslist.com

Which school will are you attending? At my school, there is no need for a car. Then there are schools where you can’t do much without a car.

Relative…

Edit:
This is seriously the best way to do it. Find someone who is related to you who takes good care of their cars and owns an older reliable car which is around 100k-150k. Tell them why you need and offer to buy it from them. There are benefits for them selling/giving to you. For a $1000, you’re not going to find something reliable/well taken car of that will last you very long. Even if you do, it likely has problems and you’ll have to spend a lot on maintenance initially. Maybe you can find a beater that will last you a couple to two thousand miles, but I don’t think it’s worth it.

Failing finding a relative, I would just suck it up and live without a car until I had enough cash to find a decent used car.

Short answer: no, it’s not possible.

Long answer:
I’ll second noct- for $1k, you really aren’t going to find what you are looking for. Especially if you don’t know anything about cars, the chances of finding something that only has minor problems is almost none. If you’re on that tight of a budget, you also have to consider gas and insurance- which both stack up pretty quickly.

yea. you need to find a relative or a good friend…cuz a 1000 dollar car anywhere else is not reliable at all.

Agreed, your best shot is probably a relative (or perhaps like, a close friend of your grandparents or something). Unless you happen to know someone, I think it’s an extremely slim chance that you’ll find a reliable used vehicle for 1k.

If you spend 1k on a car you’ll be spending more than that fixing it over the next year, guarenteed.

An auction.

don’t do it, bad idea all around. save the thousand and take the bus

What’s the minimum (appoximately) you need to spend to get an acceptable used car? I also know nothing about cars.

For a decent used car, Id really say that you need to put up at least 2000. Go with a mid 90’s Honda or Toyota with under 140,000. Either of those should last another 5-6 years or 50-60000 miles. There will probably be minor problems along the way but thats what a used car gets you… Make sure you have it checked by a mechanic. Any seller who wont let you, knows that there is something wrong with it that theyre not telling you about.

Remember all the other costs of a car. Even liability insurance will be very expensive if you are under 25.
