A housing thread for potential 2007-2008. Anyone who knows anything, tell us about the differences between residences. I was admitted EA but am waiting till April before sending the deposit, but the brochure says I will still get priority over RD admits. Currently I am thinking Snell-Hitchcock, Burton-Judson, and then Breckinridge as my choices. Am I already screwed out of Snell-Hitch and B-J? I assume those fill up quite fast.

(Haha, those are my first two choices, too… alas for my inability to stay out of the mainstream.)

I think the brochure said that priority is given to people who turn the housing form in before April 15 (14?). I could be wrong.

It seems that the april 15th deadline for “priority” is given is because that is when they expect to get the regular decisions out, and as housing is done first come-first serve, we would be applying for housing without the regular pool competing with us.

Anybody submit their stuff yet? If so list your choices.

There was another recent thread about housing options that you may want to check out.

At least when my son was accepted, EA’s had first priority, then RD’s (by date). He was one of the 5-6 RD’s that got into Hitchcock, his first choice - but more spaces were open that year than normal.

I think there were a couple of questions about your roommates in the form - if you answer no preference, it is easier to place you - so you may have a better shot at your first choice. Also, if you are messy and stay up late (or are neat and go to bed early) answer honestly on the form. If you have any doubts, ask your mom. You will get an opinion (LOL), although maybe not the one you want.

Another minor question: on the form, does Snell-Hitchcock count for one choice? Or do you write 1. Hitchcock, 2. Snell?

I’m not in yet (I wish I knew) but Max Palevsky looks really nice–it’s close to campus and I think it is the newest housing unit. I like the idea of apartment-style housing even more, but I don’t know if a lot of freshman can do that. Shoreland is apparently very far away…

I sent mine in already. S-H, BJ, and Shoreland, that order.

i sent mine too: b-j, s-h, breckinridge.

Snell-Hitchcock and B-J seem to be primarily EA dorms-- S-H because it’s on the quads and it’s got a hell of a personality, and B-J because it’s drop dead gorgeous, somewhat near important buildings, big, beautiful, etc.

With basically all the dorms at Chicago, you’ll easily win a “my dorm is better than yours” contest with your friends at other colleges. Even in dorms with smaller rooms-- like Max and Pierce-- the atmosphere and location is such that they’re still very desirable.

You can’t compare the rooms at Max with the rooms at Pierce. Max has relatively spacious rooms - there is nothing to complain about there. (Pierce, on the other hand, is tiny).

With that said, Broadview has singles that are larger than a double in Max, and with a private bathroom. Of course, you have a substantially longer walk to the dining hall and your classes.

I’m not sure I’m going to Chicago yet, so I haven’t sent in the form, but I think I’m doing Max, BJ and Maclean, but the order might switch depending on if I decide that I want either a single or a double.

Do many freshman live in Stony Island or Blackstone, or is it mostly upperclassmen?

Stony Island and Blackstone are specifically for upperclassmen and transfers. All other on-campus housing is available for first-years.

I don’t know if this has been posted before, but it’s the Chicago Maroon’s take on the dorms:

http://maroon.uchicago.edu/pdf/housingguide.pdf

Note that some of the information is outdated. For example, smoking is no longer allowed in any dorm (Illinois state law, I believe) and that the bus and shuttle systems have changed slightly. Other than that, this guide is pretty golden.

… except for that fact that it doesnt specifically mention the uncontestable truth that bj is the awesomest dorm… other n that its pretty good.

LMAO moves B-J into first choice spot

OH WAIT! EA ppl get first picks??

I have a semi-related question for current students, so I thought I’d tack it on here instead of making a new thread. Are the beds XL or regular twins? I got some sheets for Christmas that I need to exchange, and I figure I might as well get something that I can use next year instead of at home, where I have a larger bed and plenty of sheets. If it matters, I put down S-H, B-J, and Shoreland as my choices.

Get XL sheets. Pierce beds take regular sheets, but since you didn’t put that as one of your options, don’t worry about it.

I was wondering how many students are choosing the Shoreland on the chance that living there first year may give them priority status for living in the brand new dorm their second year?
