I am not all that familiar with Garden City and am wondering where to live…preferably with SAFE public transportation to Garden City campus.

My dream is to live in NYC (is this doable?). I have also heard that Astoria Queens is a fun place for singles but I do not know how easy it would be to get to Garden City.

This is the cafe part of the general parent forum for all of College Confidential. Your question might best be asked in a different forum where people know which Garden City you are talking about and which Garden City campus you are talking about. Is there a forum for the college you are discussing? I suggest you post your question there.

It is a half an hour plus train ride form Manhattan to Garden City. Other then commuting in and out of the city public transportation on Long Island is awful. Not sure how you would get to the campus from the train station. Rents are very unaffordable in both NYC and Long Island. You would be better off checking with the school. See what they say. Maybe they have a housing exchange. Try craigslist for Hicksville, East Meadow, and parts of Westbury. They are close to Garden City…avoid Hempstead and parts of Uniondale. Although Uniondale has a lot of Hofstra students living off campus. Astoria Queens won’t work…its closer to Garden City but a horrible commute and on the wrong train line. Don’t even think of driving in and out of Manhattan, it goes at a snail’s pace.

There is an LIRR train station walking distance to campus and a shuttle bus from the train but I would not consider it an easy commute. It would also be extremely expensive…both the rent in the city and the train fare. Astoria would not be realistic using public transportation. I think the school would be your best resource for housing ideas.

…is your decision firm? As a former Long Islander I can tell you that it might be hard to meet people because a lot of the student population are from the area and commute. They are into their own established lives.

The Long Island railroad has 2 stops near Adelphi in Garden City and Nassau Rd in Garden City Park both walkable or a very short cab ride. Re off campus housing mostly apts in private homes or apt buildings but yes rents are high, maybe you could find a house share. North of Garden City is Mineola, New Hyde Park, West is Stewart Manor, Franklin Square all in Nassau County, safe areas. The queens county line is Floral Park/ Bellerose also on the LIRR’s Hempstead line to NYC. Rockville Centre is nice area with bars, restaurants and more apt complexes south west of Garden City also with a different LIRR line into NYC but not an easy public transport to Adelphi. Depending on your school schedule you could commute by train 45 min to hr from Astoria (depending on area of Astoria) with a short bus ride/cab to LIRR (Woodside station) to Garden City. My son just moved to Astoria but works in NYC so he only has a 20 min subway ride.Another thought if you want the city living experience is Forest Hills in Queens a mid point between NYC and Garden City along LIRR line.

Are you saying that you will be a grad student at Adelphi but will not have a car? Without a car your options will be limited because most non-rush hour trains on the LIRR run once or twice an hour. You are going to have to work around your school schedule/transportation schedule. Rockville Centre does have a lot of bars and restaurants and a good train line into NYC but as above poster indicates not on the same line as Garden City/Adelphi Campus. Same goes for Long Beach. Garden City is a lovely, sedate community but not much in the way of nightlife.

I am trying to see if I can get by without a car…Which town would be fun for single crowd and able to easily get to Adelphi? Does any such thing exist, or will I absolutely HAVE to have car.Are there buses that are safe to ride after dark that I could use?

You will absolutely have to have a car on Long Island. Trust me I grew up in that area and it is even more populated and congested than years ago. You will be miserable without a car. Best town on Long Island for singles…hands down Huntington Village but that is in the next county.

Questbest…are you the mom or one of the daughters? Your posts are confusing because you are posting as both.

Pone of the Questbest daughters supposedly is looking at Tuoro College for speech pathology. It’s in Brooklyn. That was posted after March 10. If these are sisters, maybe they could find a place to share that is between Tuoro and Alelphi.
