We just received a mailing from a company offering bed linens that will fit the extra long bed at DD’s school. I would like to compare prices/quality and would appreciate any advice from parents/students on where to purchase these extra long bed linens.

All of the stores like Sears, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Linens 'n Things, etc. sell these extra long sheets during the summer. There is no need to by them from the company does the mailings.

If you will be in need of a full set of bedding, Bed, Bath, and Beyond sells complete sets that include the extra-long sheets. For those who already have a comforter or quilt or whatever that they plan to use, they also sell just sheet sets without the rest of the stuff.

Bed, Bath, and Beyond also has extra-long mattress pads, which are kind of nice to have, especially if the dorm mattress turns out to be the kind with uncomfortable buttons or inexplicable stains on it.

Ebay is also a good source. type “xl twin sheets”, 113 came up.

I’ve read that the linens provided by those companies that send the mailings are low thread count and very stiff and scratchy, even after washing. TwinXL linens aren’t hard to find, as others have mentioned above. If you don’t have a Target or Linens N Things or Bed, Bath & Beyond in your neighborhood, ordering online is the next best thing.

There’s a whole sticky thread on the Parents’ Cafe: Last Year’s Bedding Thread.

Did anyone get foam top mattress pad? I just a 4 in one for my D and am wondering if that’s useful?

S wouldnt sleep w/o the egg crate type foam pad, which he flips over…bumpy side towards the college mattress, smooth side up. D did the same thing when she lived in a dorm.Very useful.Over that we put a well padded mattress cover and stretchy jersey sheets. Makes a comfortable bed.

A few minutes on google brought up a ton of websites dedicated to the xl-sheet. Linen Locker, Dormbuys.com, kinglinen.com, pbteens…not to mention the mail order catalog companies like Touch of Class, Domestications, and Company Store. Depends on what you want to spend, thread count, styles.

Ditto Cathymee’s bed comfy bed construction. Ordered XL twin jersey sheets online from Domestications. Cheap, lots of colors and very soft. Got a king size memory foam pad from Overstock. Son cut it in half, he and dormmate each ended up with perfect fitting pads while splitting price. Used BB&B coupons for some cheap, plush fleece blankets. Very easy to wash and dry, much easier than a comforter and good weight since dorm tends to be overheated.

Also Ikea (not a great selection, but they do have some). Friends have told me from their past experiences that all they really need is a twinXL fitted sheet.

got ours from JC Penney. S and roommate both ditched the top sheets and just went with fitted sheets and comforters (and foam mattres pad)

I have 3 questions please:

oldfort—what do you mean by a “4 in one foam top mattress pad” ?

I found a twin XL fiberbed on BB&B <a href=“Bed Bath & Beyond | The Best Deals Online: Furniture, Bedding, Rugs, Kitchen Essentials & Moree”>Bed Bath & Beyond | The Best Deals Online: Furniture, Bedding, Rugs, Kitchen Essentials & Moree. I don’t have any experience with featherbeds or other bed toppers and I can’t tell from the photo: do these usually have elastic loops on the corners or are they just held in place by the mattress cover and bottom sheet?

After looking at the fiberbed and reading other posts, though, I was thinking an egg crate might provide better cushioning for my S. Have the egg crate type pads you have found/purchased have a tag or something indicating they are fire “safe” (I mean, on par with regulations for mattresses and box springs)? I ask this because in doing a search about egg crates I came across this old CC post about egg crates being a fire hazard and I don’t know if that refers to a particular type:

I bought a very soft XL twin sheet set at Bed, Bath and Beyond recently for $30. It’s easy to find 20% off coupons (worth $6 in this case), plus they also accept Linens 'n Things coupons.

They had an outbreak of bedbugs at Ohio Sate this past year, involving several floors in one dorm. I’m sending D to UW w/a mattress cover that zips, and she’ll put the egg crate thingie over that, followed by jersey sheets. D in CT already has a mattress cover, I think she got her twin XL one at BB & B. Dorm mattresses can be quite, um, disgusting!

Garnet Hill’s cotton is always good quality if you don’t like that polyester feel of most of the sheets.

I fell for the order-linens-from-the-school offer. I do not recommend it! The sheets remained stiff and scratchy even after repeated washings. New sheets were purchased for Christmas.

By mid July, Target, BB&B. etc. will be full of XLong twin bedding.

I ordered mattress and pillow covers from http://achooallergy.com/ becuase DS has some allergy/asthma problems. They were not inexpensive, but they were nice, because the covers were not stiff, plasticy stuff, but rather soft and breathable.

I also vote in favor of mattress toppers. The dorm mattresses I have seen are rather thin and not terribly comfortable.

Then, to add to the Princess and the Pea visual, I also recommend a matress pad to go on top of the egg crate. It just smooths everything out, and the softness and suooprt from the egg-crate topper remains.

Yawn…makes me want to take a nap…

I was in JC Penney’s today and they have their x-long sheet sets out already. 250 count – 19.99.

nikrud- my sympathy with any bedbug situation. My building was one of many in my area infested a while back. We live close to a college dorm that also had an outbreak. The elimination effort in my building was exhausting and incredibly disruptive. I sent son off to college with a twin XL vinyl zippered mattress cover, none of us ever want to go through that again!

I bought a VERY NICE extra long sheet set today at TJ Maxx - 19.99 for the set…
