You will probably have better luck with local Oahu stores than buying sight unseen online… I was going to suggest Marriott bed, but the smallest they sell is queen size.
Mattress prices are often ridiculously inflated in retail settings. IMO, shopping Costco is the best way to avoid the scammers. There’s a company called “The Mattress Firm”. I wouldn’t recommend them, but it’s a great name.
I used to look at the labels when travelling. Sure, call the B&B and ask what brand and firmness. Adore the Marriott beds. They go on sale a few times/year.
I did buy a full-size Bed in a Box online for a guest bedroom, via Amazon. Very inexpensive. It’s wonderful, feels like a Marriott, perfect firmness. But I wonder how it would hold up if used 365 days/year. That matters.
Yeah, our Costco mattress which we are currently sleeping on was fine—for awhile. Now it causes H pain. D has a mattress on her twin bed that is older—over a decade old and still perfect (probably higher quality to begin with).
I bought our last couple of mattresses from Macy’s. Was able to try them out in the store (to see how firm I wanted it). They delivered and took the old one away. They were the most professional furniture delivery I have ever experienced (down to the little paper booties so they wouldn’t walk on my floor with their outside shoes). Came exactly when promised and took about 15 minutes total.
We have purchased three mattresses from Mattress Firm in three different states with no issues. Just be prepared to “discuss” the pricing because it’s like buying a used car.
@HImom check your bed foundation. Sometimes it’s not the mattress, but it’s what’s under it that causes the issues.
How old is that old mattress?
If your husband finds it uncomfortable, all the more reason for HIM to try other mattresses at a store of some sort.
Just a word of caution on Mattress Firm. They recently filed chapter 11 and had some issue with mattress manufacturers. They stopped carrying tempurpedic & sealy because of a pricing disagreement and claims of bogus mattresses. I would probably avoid them right now.
Mattress Firm’s bankruptcy filing comes just days after Amazon.com announced it was getting into the online bed-in-a-box business, popularized in recent years by the likes of Casper, Purple and Tuft & Needle, which was acquired by Serta Simmons in August. Walmart launched its own online premium mattress brand, Allswell, earlier this year. The basic premise of each brand is the same: Buy a mattress online and try it at home. If you don’t like it, you’ll get a full refund.
We have decided to ask our kids to help us get a mattress for Christmas. This way, if we decide on Costco, they can help us wrangle the mattress. We still haven’t done much searching.
Do you have a real box spring, or just a platform? Without a real box spring, mattresses aren’t going to hold up near as long. The mattress is taking all the weight otherwise, causing it to break down much quicker. Mattresses aren’t made to last long anymore, since they are no flip. I think you’re lucky to get 5 good years out of them, as flippable used to be around 10.
I bought one at mattress firm this summer for a guest bedroom. I like firm, and it was quite comfy. But I can’t attest to it’s longevity,
@conmama good luck getting a true box spring. Many mattress manufacturers just don’t make those anymore. They provide a “foundation” that looks like a box spring… but it isn’t.
@thumper1 , I know! The one we bought from Mattress Firm is just a foundation, but like I said it’s just for the guest room. There is a store in my city that still makes flipsble mattresses with box springs, but they are very expensive.
