I know there are no guarantees on something this old, but also would like to have a trusted spot to at least look. Don’t try and talk me into a newer one - there is a sentimental attachment to this model for the person who is looking and nothing else will do !!! The Apple site doesn’t sell this old a model as far as I can see.

If you’re buying used notebooks, especially on CL/ebay…you’re taking a bit of a gamble.

Not only with regard to whether you’ll get what you ordered in the condition it is supposedly in, but also whether the previous owner took good care of it or not and whether the machine will last more years or fail due to lack of care/worn parts.

I’d only recommend this path if you yourself or someone you know is competent with working on notebook computers and if it’s someone else, who is willing to work on it for nominal/free charge*.

Also, be aware that Apple has a history of “obsoleting” their older models so one cannot load newer operating systems and they’re more aggressive about cutting support…including security updates for older versions of OSX.

In fact, the only exception in recent memory is their continuing support for OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard…last update was several months ago which is far longer than their support for previous versions within the last several years.

Ha! I don’t work on computers for free…not even for relatives. They do, however, get a discount. It’s mainly to deter them from calling me all hours of the day/night over every little computer problem without considering what it may cost them…even at a discount.

I would google “used Apple products” in your area, then once you find some confirm that they are Apple Authorized resellers. In my area there are several. I think you can be pretty certain these folks are legitimate.

Cobras, I would NOT order from ebay or similar - thus the reason for starting this thread. The person would only use it for basic things - Internet searching, posting , storing some photos, simple word processing. We do have an authorized seller in the area I think - wonder if they would have anything that older model…

We ordered an older apple laptop through ebay. The product was decent, but if I had to do it again, I would buy something newer through the refurbished site at Apple.

Apple’s website is what I’d recommend as well. But they don’t have every make/model at all times since it depends on their inventory of used equipment. It’s best to check back as their inventory changes often.

You can also check websites like microcenter. They often have refurbished older models as well… but again they vary based on what is in stock at any given time

Apple won’t have a really old model. My suggestion is to look up Mac repair places - not BestBuy but a local or two - and ask. All sorts of stuff passes through their hands.
