I am a housewife no income. And I want to have a divorce. How can I get divorce in America? We are both foreigners.
Or any recommendation for a no-contest divorce.
In my state, and presumably many others, the court system makes available forms and instructions for obtaining a divorce “pro se” (without a lawyer). Court employees are not allowed to give legal advice about filling in the forms, but the instructions answer a lot of the questions a person typically would have. Law schools and county bar associations sometimes run free or low-cost clinics at which law students and lawyers provide volunteer assistance. Good luck.
If you’re low income, Legal Aid can offer low cost of free services. Your state bar association can connect you with any low cost services in your area as well.
Yep. I went for UA’s law school clinic which only offer service to students and staffs. Legal aid only help American citizens. I am foreginer which determines I can’t get help from any of it. My husband refuses to give me any money and I am not allowed to work in America due to visa limitations. If I went to court for consultation, so I can fill a form and get divorce without a lawyer ?
Thank you for kind answering. And I am not sure if I can go and find him in his work place asking for basic living-cost. He said he is gonna call police if I go after him for money. If he call police, am I gonna be arrested for some reason?
Is there an immigration law clinic in your area? If there is, it might be a good idea to contact it to ask about your situation.
Thanks. I will google it to see if there are any.
Also, although I’m not saying you’re in an abusive relationship, if you ever think it becomes one, you should call a domestic abuse organization for help.
Is there an embassy or diplomat from yoru country in your area? Check with them too.
He doesn’t answer the phone. I send emails to him and he just asks me to find a lawer to send him divorce paper.
Thanks . There are no embassy or diplomat in my area. I am not sure if I go and find him is legal or illegal.
Sounds like he abandoned you. Is he paying the bills?
No,We live separately. And I have no idea where he lives. I got money from my parents to live.
He doesn’t afford a penny of my life.
Your situation is complex and out of the area of expertise for many of us, you might try a forum like Visa Journey. If you are here on a visa based on his job, you might not be eligible to remain in the US after divorce, or you might, it all depends on your personal details
Appreciate your kind answering. I do need to divorce lawyer and immigration lawyer too.
Are you saying you moved here, but now don’t know where your husband is…and you have no income…and you need a divorce?
Just checking for clarity.
Do your reside in Alabama? Where is your husband? In the same state or elsewhere.
Where did you marry? In your former country? Can you move back there with your family…get a divorce there?
MODERATOR’S NOTE: I agree with @somemom. There is nothing we can do to help.
