It has been recommended to me by many people here that I get therapy due to a very poor home life (family frequently yelling and hitting each me and each other, my mom randomly calling the sheriff to report that I am “trespassing”). I usually feel depressed and take sleeping pills so I can sleep all day to make it all go away.
My university’s free counselors are trained to handle “my Calc test is stressing me out” type of problems. They recommend I see a therapist or psychologist, but my university doesn’t provide those for free. Some have recommended I transfer universities, but I cannot afford to do that.
I have health insurance, but there is an issue because my runaway biological father also has insurance on me. His insurance refuses to pay or talk to me about anything because I cannot pass their security questions and my insurance that I pay for refuses to pay and says it is my father’s insurance’s responsibility. Since my health insurance won’t pay for anything, I actually got a letter from my university telling me to pay up for seeing university health or face a lawsuit.
I live in a pretty rural town and county, so there’s not any community resources I could find. I don’t have reliable transportation for myself outside of going to work.
I already have a $4000 medical bill that is months past due because of this insurance mishap and the hospital and family refusing to help me navigate this or find some way to come to a conclusion. My mom has already told me she isn’t going to help pay for any psychological services.
Most counties offer mental health services for low fees. Also, Red Cross has agencies, usually with title e.g. FAmily Services… That are on an income based charge. Some charge just $5.00 a session There are also religion based centers that offer low fee counseling.
Good luck
Call your dad’s insurance company again and ask how you can reset the security questions. Usually there is a backup procedure such as faxing a picture of your drivers license. If you can’t get anywhere on the phone, send a certified letter. Another idea: Does your university have a law school? If so, you may be able to get a free consultation with a law student to help you figure out how to get the insurance problem straightened out.
Once you have insurance straightened out, hopefully there will be a counselor that accepts your plan.
Just lost my whole message ugh.
I would suggest going to a hospital financial counseling office, where they often help with insurance matters.
Have you actually called or visited the office of your father’s insurance policy? If you call, ask for a supervisor.
Is your own health insurance through school or is it Medicaid through the state? If school did you miss a waiver period or did you think it was needed because your father isn’t accessible? Are you paying copays?
I think the first priority is getting some legal help to get your insurance card for your father’s policy. So you never had one? Your own insurance is clearly “secondary” and they will not pay until the first policy pays what it will, then the secondary policy covers whatever they don’t cover.
The hospital financial counseling office might be able to refer you to a free or low cost lawyer, or even make some calls for you. Bring identification= everything you have and especially with photos. Do you have a birth certificate? You can get one where you were born. Do you have a passport, license or id?
This CAN be fixed. But it’s tough if no one is helping you. Tell whatever facility you owe money to what the situation is and tell the counselor and/or lawyer.
Once you have the primary insurance (your father’s) you might be able to get low cost counseling.
Alternatively, you can get yourself off your father’s policy and get on Medicaid or a school plan. If your income is low, you will qualify for Medicaid and counseling will be free.
So sorry, good luck.
