Where do I get this background check? Sorry, for the ignorance. I goggled it, and some of the websites doesn’t look legit at all.

I signed up as a tutor online, and this is one of the requirement. However, I was not given any instruction on how to get the background check (only where to send the document). If I can’t figure it out on my own, I might ask them.

Forgive me for my ignorance, but I can’t imagine an organization accepting a background check from an individual. How would I verify that the document is real. When my company runs a backgound check they get it from a company, and it is not instant. The company checks all states, federal and includes a credit check from at least 2 of the 3 credit reporting agencies. Who has requested a background check that you would be required to provide?

Where we live, the local police dept will run a background check and complete a particular document about you, that they give you to give to whoever wants it.

Our non-profit has a preferred vendor who works with our insurer that will do background checks for only $9.95. Ask the non-profit organization if there is a similar arrangement or where their other tutors have gotten background checks so that they are valid and accepted by the insurer. Don’t know if our local police department does free background checks–that would be a valuable service.

Some background checks are VERY extensive and expensive. I know that some by the federal government can take a year and cost about $90,000 or so for ONE person, particularly for jobs involving classified information. I’m sure you don’t need that thorough of a check for what you describe.

You need to check with the organization you plan to volunteer with and ask them to provide you with more information. Apparently you don’t know whether they are talking about a state criminal background check or what. They should give you this information and tell you how to access it.

I agree with other posters - ask the non-profit. The non-profit I volunteer with runs background checks on all their volunteers. The volunteers pay the $15 fee.

Our non-profit says we DON’T need to conduct background checks as long as our staff and volunteers are never alone with any of the folks we serve. (They aren’t–we do everything in public settings and follow up is done over the phone.) IF we need background checks, there is the special $9.95 rate I posted above. Don’t know what it includes but it would satisfy our insurer, which is important for our non-profit.
