I was wondering if anyone could help give me some suggestions as to what colleges might be good to attend for chem. I was preferably looking in NY, NJ, PA, or Maryland. Also, is any science career even worth going into anymore. Science is the only thing I’m interested in, and it’d suck to remain jobless or with a looow salary for the rest of my life just because I chose to follow my passion

The only reason to get a science degree is to go to professional school.

Companies have no use for American Scientists. They are just loath to give them a decent salary and benefits if they hire them at all. They much prefer third world serfs.

Rutgers is a research based school. Pretty decent facilities as labs are concerned. However, I’d advise against chem as a major, period. I’ve taken some chemistry courses, and I, like you, loved chemistry. After taking those classes, I hate it. I still love certain aspects of chemistry, however, they don’t focus on that kind of stuff. More like Mol concepts, and laws, and just a bunch of boring crap. If you ever want to be above poverty level, study finance, economics, things like that, which have real applications in the real world. I’m currently approaching my senior year at Rutgers as an Economics major, and big banks such as JP Morgan, BoA, UBS, Deutsche, and some NYC based Boutiques are making offers for me to work with them. The only route for a chem major really, as I’ve been told by many of the chemistry dept. advisors is grad school. In fact, most advisors won’t really work with you, unless you are planning grad school.

Have you looked into Chapman University in CA? I heard they’re going to build a new Science Center for their BioPharmacy school.
I suggest you major in Math and minor in Chemistry or study Chemical Engineering. The Chemistry degree has lost its value. Even more so at the masters or PhD level sadly.

Since so many are advising against chemistry, maybe you should do it anyway. I would also advise getting another major along with it. Both math, physics and economics are possible. Although you may not be able to fit everything you need to set you up for grad school later if you do both. DD wanted to do economics and chemistry but was not able to get it to work and graduate early. She would be missing several classes she needed to set her up for a masters in economics even though she get her BS.

^^ That’s terrible advise. I disagree with your first statement. Chemistry by itself is a poor choice for a major. Chemistry paired with a useful major such as mathematics, engineering, economics, or accounting is beneficial to job prospects.
