^^^ I know this is true. But also thinking about the $$$ OP might be looking to spend and thinking about compatible retail stores for that similar range of $$ that are online, I recommended the outlet type stores and/or sale sections of online reatil.
Also why I asked what she was buying at Kohl’s/JCP - is she buying from the junior, misses or plus dept? Is she choosing the Vera Wang line - or sticking with Sonoma (I think that is Kohl’s home line) basics?
Banana Republic is a bit boring but does carry office appropriate clothing at reasonable prices and there’s almost always a sale or promotion going on.
I hate shopping for clothes online. My daughters buy so much stuff online but it’s such a hassle for returns unless you are Zappos!! I ordered a pair of shoes from Lord and Taylor and returned them to the store where they politely charged a darn restocking fee. I was so mad!
D is a 0 or 00, so she can rarely find things in the stores that fit her. She does have to buy a lot of her things online but prefers to at least have a sense of whether the garment will be swimming on her or more likely to fit. So far, she has had a lot of mixed results. I’m a more mainstream size of about 10 or so on Lauren dresses and similar and am able to try on many garments to see what they’re like in person. Our local stores don’t have the selection that is available online, so for special events, I will order online. I do prefer to see and feel the textures of the garments, so prefer to at least check in person before ordering anything.
I work in midtown Manhattan so have access to plenty of stores including the new Nordstrom Rack that just opened on 6th Ave & 31st St but I have ordered from Lord & Taylor, Nordstrom, J. Crew, Banana, Anthropologie for clothes. I’ve ordered plenty of shoes from Zappo’s and outstanding duck boots and nice soft winter hats from L.L. Bean. I just ordered some things for my husband from Lands End and have also ordered from Eddie Bauer. Most places offer free shipping and frequently free returns. My colleague at work orders a lot from 6 PM.com which is the clearance for Zappo’s but frequently some of the same items are also on Zappo’s which has free shipping/returns while 6 PM does not.
I’ve never been charged a restocking fee at Lord and Taylor and usually order online and return to the store. Maybe the return was way past the date of the original sale??
I order 80% of my clothes online from Nordstrom (quick, free shipping and free returns), Banana Republic, Grace & Lace (for casual, younger stuff that I pass off to one of my daughters if it’s too young or too small), Social Threads (tops), and Poshmark (resales). I recently ordered a dress from Boden that I love, so I’ll be adding them to the rotation. I have not liked Boden in the past, but maybe they’ve changed. I use Poshmark when I want to try out a brand or have something from a previous season that I want to replace. Amazon for clothing amazes me–I went looking for a navy t-shirt dress for a specific occasion, and I was shocked at the vast number of $15 dresses with 500-1000 reviews. I love that so many people will take pictures of themselves in the items and include them in their reviews, not to mention provide frank descriptions of their bodies, e.g., 5’4", 165, 36D, wide shoulders.
I only order with free shipping and free returns except for smaller retailers. I find returns super-simple–I keep those plastic envelopes items come in, flip them inside out, affix the (usually included) return mailing label, tape it shut with packing tape and stick it back into the mailbox. It’s much easier than driving to a store and trying things on.
There have been some issues with fakery being regularly sold on Tradesy and Poshmark. I think RealReal has a better reputation for checking their stuff. That is my source of recycled fashion.
I like Costco clothing–in person & online. They tend to have well-known brands and decent quality. I’ve ordered from Macy’s, tried things on and then returned those that didn’t fit or we didn’t like. It works OK.
