Where to post questions

Hello all. I’m new to the CC forums. By scanning posts I have learned a couple things, 1) it seems daughter is abbreviated to “D” and 2) although I am unsure of the definition, I’m pretty sure I am a “helicopter parent”.

I need some help on where to post questions. D1 is a rising hs senior and I posted a question about her #1 school choice in the College Majors (Art Major) forum. Right place? Or are parent to post only in the parents forum?

D2 is a rising hs junior and I have questions regarding her current #1 choice, DePaul, and their theatre program. Where do I post the question?

Thanks for the help.

Welcome. Assuming D1 is an art major, then it’s in the right place.

I suggest the question regarding D2 be posted in the Music Theater forum.

Different virtual neighborhoods get different volumes of virtual foot-traffic. The Parents Forum seems to get a lot; some of the other corners not so many. So if a topic is something parents are likely to know about, it’s often a good idea to cross-post here. Also, the average level of spelling, grammar, and rationality on the responses seems higher in the Parents Forum than elsewhere.

If you pay attention, you’ll notice that almost all the forums draw posts from both kids and parents, but the ratios differ a lot from one forum to another.

Unfortunately, I can’t help you. I know nothing about the KC College of Art, or the theater program at DePaul. There are a lot of posters who know a lot about theater programs, though. I haven’t seen as much discussion about art schools.

DnKDad, there’s also a theatre/drama thread in the Arts Forum, although it doesn’t get quite as much traffic as the musical theatre forum. If your daughter #2 is looking seriously at DePaul’s program, you both need to familiarize yourself with their cut policy; it can be quite brutal and is a deal-breaker for some parents and students. DePaul is NOT the only theatre program which has a cut policy, so I’m not trying to pick on a very fine program, but it’s definitely something that needs to be considered carefully.

HI, as other parents have already advised you, there are a few places where you might want to post. One is here on the Parent Forum, to talk to other parents (and some students post here too) about general topics applicable to the college selection and admissions process. If you are seeking information on straight theater programs, including DePaul, go to the Arts Majors forum and there is a LONG ongoing thread about Theater/Drama Colleges. However, a MUCH more active forum is the Musical Theater forum. While more people on that forum are interested in musical theater over straight drama, there are definitely posters on that forum who are interested in regular theater/acting. There is overlap on that forum. Further, some of the colleges for musical theater, also offer BFA in Acting programs and so that is another area of overlap on that forum. That is not the case with DePaul, however, as it is for straight acting only, not musical theater. However, DePaul has been discussed on the MT Forum in the past. You can use the “search” function and search threads/posts on the Musical Theater forum to find ones specifically about DePaul. As mezzomom mentions, please familiarize yourself with the cut policy at DePaul.

Welcome, and I hope that helps.

As you have learned, “D” usually means “daughter”, “DD” would be “darling daughter”, but be careful. “D” has been used to mean the family dog. It can be confusing, but it’s all about context.

Thanks to all. I’ll post something over in the musical theatre forum, although as mentioned, the DePaul program is acting and not musical theatre. Please elaborate on the “cut” policy, I definetly am not familiar. Again, thanks.

If you do a search on the Musical Theater Forum, there was plenty of discussion about DePaul’s cut policy there. It is very important if your child is looking at a school with this kind of cut policy, that you are familiar and comfortable with it before entering. Rather than rehash the issues here, I first suggest you read the discussion on the MT Forum about this very issue at DePaul, and then other searches of cut policies as well. If you have a question, I’d be happy to try to help but I think it is easier if you first read the threads discussing that topic.

DnKDad, Susan’s suggestion to search the MT forum, where there has been much discussion of cut policies, is a good one. But just to get you acquainted with DePaul’s approach, I copied this from their website:

I see you posted an inquiry over on the MT Forum. I responded over there and provided you to links to two threads on the MT Forum discussing DePaul and in particular, the cut policy in the theater program.

I also provided you with a link the the DePaul Forum on CC, which is not specific to theater.

Also, look within the Theater/Drama Colleges threads in the Arts Forum.

Be aware that DePaul’s cut policy, unlike some other schools that may cut based on an artistic review, WILL cut by NUMBER…they will cut 26 out of 52 freshmen in the program, no matter how many are talented enough to been already admitted as freshmen or are still talented at the end of the year. Half the class will go every year, no matter what. Read the threads I linked for you there. DePaul is well regarded for drama but it is important to be comfortable with this policy which is not how things are done at many other top theater BFA programs before committing to enroll.
