Where to stay in Charleston SC

Looking for suggestions for hotel, things to do etc for a girls weekend this fall. Not looking for spas as we only have 2 days to spend seeing the city. Thanks!

I highly recommend staying at Charleston Place Hotel.

In 3 days we ate at all the top-rated restaurants and the one we liked best was Husk.

My wife dragged me down the street to the Charleston visitors center. There we got great tour recommendations based on the specifics of what we wanted to see-- mostly interested in historical homes. Since you are only there for 2 days, I would use the free advice from the visitor center to arrange your tours for you and they can pack in a tight, well organized 2-day itinerary based on your interests.

Have fun!

Best western King Charles inn is really nice and centrally located as well

If you’re also looking for places to eat, one place my husband and daughter dined at 2 weeks ago was Husk, and they said it had gotten great reviews but the food was not good. They were there on a Sunday. Maybe the chef was off that day?

Charleston Place and the Vendue Inn are the two places that I would recommend highly. Great locations, beautiful accomodations, terrific service. Lots of wonderful galleries and antique shops to see. Gorgeous architecture in those beauties along the harbor. You can walk easily around the city and see all kinds of interesting things without getting into your car.

Agree with Best Western King Charles. Was recommended by a friend we stayed there for a couple nights for our anniversary last year. Reasonable prices, easy to walk to everything, free parking and way above what you would think a Best Western would be. Loved a dinner at “Magnolia”, and I will have to think of/look up the name of the other fabulous restaurant we ate at.

French Quarter Inn. The location is great and the rooms nice. Not as costly as Charleston Place. We love the horse drawn Carriage tour.

On our way back from Florida, we stopped overnight @ Charleston. Since it was spur of the moment, we got a room @ Hyatt Place. It was outside of the city near a shopping outlet which was fantastic. At night, we drove in found a great restaurant called 82 Queen(on Queen St.) beautiful courtyard in a lovely area. It was perfect. My foodie daughter found it and we were pleased with the meal. Husk looked great too. It has a beautiful veranda. Featured in Martha Stewart’s Living. It is on Queen St. The parking garage was directly across the street from restaurant. The rooms at the Hyatt Place are clean and modern. Priced right and if you are not into the spa thing, why waste money on that and spend it on food. That’s where my priorities lie.

Charleston Place.

Queen St. has 3 very good restaurants: Queen 82, Poogan’s Porch, and Husk. They are all practically right next door from one another!

I second the Vendue Inn. It was lovely, and within walking distance of everything. Have a drink on their roof bar at sunset, it’s beautiful.

We also went to Husk during restaurant week were they had a limited menu. I loved the food, hubby hated it. But the atmosphere and service were top notch.

We went to SNOB, Cafe Cru, what the heck we never had a bad meal. We stayed in the historic district. The result was we walked everywhere. And that was a pleasure in and of itself.

We’ve stayed twice at Fulton Lane Inn downtown. Got super prices off Priceline the first time and then went back with about 40 people for a retreat. Nice rooms (recently renovated), nice continental breakfast, easy park behind the inn, and fantastic location on main street (walk to everything). Fulton Lane is connected with the next door property also which I heard was nice also (you can eat a regular brkfst there). Also wine/cheese at 5pm daily.
Lots of good food. We went to Husk (enjoyed it very much) and SNOB was totally packed so we didn’t get to eat there. But most of the places have good food. Some good BBQ places too. Hard to not enjoy a meal.
Hyman’s Seafood was great too.

things to do: the market, a ghost or city tour, tour some of the old historic homes, antiquing, lots of little fun shops up and down, the Yorktown, bar hopping (they have tours but if you do a bit of research…), Magnolia Plantation (plus there are a couple others (on your own or on a tour). You’ll be back for whatever you miss the first time!

We have eaten at Jestine’s Kitchen, Hominy Grill, Fuel, and Dixie Supply and Bakery (breakfast). All were very enjoyable

My girls love the Market downtown. The carriage rides are expensive, but almost a must if it is your first time visiting. If you want to go to the beach, we always go to Isle of Palms. There is a public beach that is county-run and very nice.

My brother-in-law works at the Mills House Hotel. I haven’t stayed there in years and it is under new management, so I can’t really say what it’s like now. I have stayed at the Vendue Inn. It wasn’t my cup of tea. We usually stay out near Isle of Palms in Mount Pleasant instead of downtown. A lot cheaper and close to the beach.

Some of our favorite places to eat are on the inlet - The Boathouse, Vickery’s and Shem Creek Bar and Grill. But Magnolia’s downtown is a must.

Belated thanks to all who offered suggestions for my trip to Charleston. I have returned and what a beautiful place! I was able to spend about 2 1/2 days there. We stayed at the Vendue Inn which was quite charming and perfectly located. We had a really comfortable room with a gas fireplace (which my friend traveling from AZ appreciated as the weather was very cool (40’s-50’s) when we were there late Oct. We ate at Magnolia’s which was ok. My friend had the fried chicken which was delicious but my pork chop was just so so. Ate also at S.N.O.B. which was amazing. Great food, great service. Also ate at 82 Queen which was quite good but a bit chilly eating on their outside terrace (only choice that night). Had alot of fun walking all over seeing all of the beautiful homes. Went to Magnolia Plantation and Fort Sumter, the city market, a carriage ride etc. Highly recommend a visit if you ever find yourself in South Carolina. Many thanks for all of the suggestions. CC readers are the best.

Love the park rangers at Fort Sumter–my niece is a ranger there!
