Grade Decline Explained - Parents divorced, mother diagnosed with cancer, moved 3 times in the same school year(Primarily me loading everything into a moving truck and missing tons of school because offinancial situation at the time), helped contribute towards bills for a brief period, and teacher refused to communicate with me for 16 weeks(ended up getting fired).

So, I had a nice upward climb going and was projected for a 3.75 unweighted by the end of Junior year but life happened. Not trying to use it as a crutch/excuse, just simply saying what happened and moving on.

Would just like to have some ideas of where I should consider looking, I felt confident going into Junior year that my options would be plentiful with a good year of school but now I’m feeling skeptical of getting into even an average school.

-Thanks

Make sure the admission committee at every school you apply to knows about your extenuating circumstance for the low GPA because with that class rank you won’t even get into George Mason.

University of Virginia- Extreme Reach
College of William and Mary- High Reach
Virginia Tech- high Match
George Mason- Match

Any others I might be able to consider? I’d be willing to go out of state as well (financial situation is better now). Doesn’t need to be a huge school. Small-medium sized is perfectly fine.

Question to above poster: When you say high match, what would that equate to in a percentage? Also on Virginia Tech’s application I noticed that it isn’t very personal, kind of just “Yes/No” type answers and then 200 words to explain anything. Should/would my guidance counselor be able to send a letter of explanation or something along those lines accompanying my transcript?

Yes, your GC would be the right person to do that. As far as OOS, will both parents contribute to school? How much are they willing to spend?

Both parents would be willing to contribute, I’m not sure as to how much. Haven’t opened that discussions with them yet. I’m looking for a few more matches, and potentially high matches, maybe like one more reach. Rather not just cap myself off at the above suggestions. Would be happy enough to get into Virginia Tech, and then potentially transfer later on. Anything else I can do/add to improve my chances?

Do you have any preferences? Urban, rural, suburban? Big campus, small campus? Etc.

A match means that you have a reasonable shot of getting in. A safety means that you’re almost guaranteed to get in (AND that you can afford it and would be comfortable going there). A reach means that it’s unlikely that you’ll be admitted.
A high match would basically be a match that’s very close to being a reach. It’s like a scale.
You’re not really going to be able to a get an exact percentage.

I’m a very versatile person. I’ll feel comfortable no matter the size of the school/location.

Ideally I’d like a medium to smaller sized school in a suburban area.

However, at this point I feel like I’ll be fine with whatever school accepts me. Worst comes to worst I rot away at community college earning a 3.75+ for 1-2 years and get automatically accepted to any college in Virginia via the agreements established.

I think you would have no problem getting into West Virginia University.

Go to the CC main page and take a run through the College Selection Engine.

Vanderbilt University
PolyTechnic Institute of New York
Emory & Henry College
Virginia Tech
George Mason

Were suggested for me. Tech I had a 55% chance of getting into with my scores as they stand. I feel like Vanderbilt and New York are out of budget, but I’ll have to find out what said budget is first.
