Where would you go with 12-14 days mid October

My son and his wife were set to travel on the end of a business trip she had scheduled to Asia. Her trip was postponed and he can’t reschedule his vacation time. They don’t want Asia as she doesn’t want to travel that direction and have to go again two weeks later.

He asked me about the BVI. I’ve only been to the Caribbean on a sailboat so I don’t have much advise to give him. In the past I would have planned a sailing trip in late October but now with all the hurricanes I would be hesitant.
Where would you go in October?

I wouldn’t go to the Caribbean during hurricane season either.

When I first read through and read October, I immediately though Fall foliage trip, but late October is probably too late in the season.

Are they looking for sightseeing, relaxation, or an adventure vacation? Warm or cold?

In may be late in the season for fall foliage in New England, but it’ll just be getting into prime season further south (the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Trail come to mind). If you want to add in something cultural or historic, Washington DC, Colonial Williamsburg, etc. might be nice destinations. And if you’re feeling adventurous, the longest pedestrian bridge with a glass insert for viewing just opened up:

Peak foliage is right around October 15 in Portland, Maine. I vote for that. @LoveTheBard 's suggestions are good too, though.

Depends upon your starting point. In which part / region of the US do you currently live ?

Austria or New Zealand might be worth considering since you have a full two weeks.

Capri is or anyplace in Italy ( other than the cities) is lovely at that time of year. So are many parts of Europe that are otherwise too hot/too many people in the Summer ( Greece/Spain/Portugal/ etc). October is the best travel month. Depends on what they like to do. NE is a good suggest but will be crowded. Also check hotels. You can’t just wander around and find a nice B&B in the Fall. Plus it can be cold.

October is a great time to travel to many places.
It will be peak leaf peeping time in much of New England. Book soon to maximize choices.

Italy at harvest time is wonderful.
I highly recommend Morocco as well.

We went to the Virgin Islands several times for Thanksgiving and even that late there was often the stray hurricane to worry about. I wouldn’t go in October. Fingerlakes should also be very nice in mid-October. Ithaca is lovely and there’s quite a lot of tasty wine as well as cider and beer. Corning Glass Museum is nearby. Seneca Falls, Harriet Tubman house are also in the area. Definitely would need reservations. Lots of cute B&Bs.

I’m not sure how much the BVIs have recovered from the last hurricane. Some of the resorts are still rebuilding.

My D and her boyfriend went to Virgin Gorda in June. He had been there lots, it was her first time. She had a great time. The only thing she mentioned was that it wasn’t easy to get to. One flight from NYC and 2 ferries. I know they stayed in a villa, the pictures were gorgeous.

How about Hawaii? My older kids went last October. They liked it but commented how far it is from the east coast. I think they liked the Caribbean better. They went to St. Lucia for their honeymoon in October. Rolled the dice but no hurricanes either before or during their honeymoon. They got lucky

California is beautiful in October. How about a coastal tour.

If staying in the US, the southwest is glorious in October, Grand Canyon, Lake Powell/Antelope Canyon/Horseshoe Bend; Bryce, Zion, Moab, Arches, etc. The worst of the tourist rush is over and the weather is much cooler, 70s/80s instead of 90s/100s.

The more I think about it I wouldn’t go to the Caribbean. I passed that opinion on to him. If it was me I’d go to Italy or Hawaii. In Hawaii they could go to two islands and have a relaxing trip. I don’t know why but all my kids aren’t hugely enthusiastic about Hawaii. They grew up on the west coast and going to Hawaii is common amongst their friends. My kids have only been once so I don’t get why they don’t just go to Hawaii. My DIL has never been.
@conmama they were both born, raised and lived their entire lives in Ca. They presently live on the Ca coast so while it’s lovely it’s home.
I love to travel in October. I should be thinking about a trip for me!

@LoveTheBard I saw that bridge on the news a few nights ago. One October my H and I visited the Blue Ridge mountains. What lovely country.
I don’t know what kind of trip they want. I’m assuming relaxing since they thought of BVI. They are extremely last minute planners so I could see them deciding the week before. I know my DIL has to fly to China 10 days after they get back from vacation. That is figuring in their decision making.

I would then second Italy, if they are from CA already.

12-14 days is a nice chunk of time. I would want to do a trip that wouldn’t be that easy to do another time. You could do a fall east coast trip in a week or less. And for that long even if you love the beach (which I do!) I probably wouldn’t want a trip that limits me to one island or something for two weeks.

Any trip abroad that is not close to the original destination but they have always wanted to go - that’s the ticket!

If Italy is on the horizon, I’d vote for Venice. The Art Biennale will still be going strong and it’s such a magical city. They can also travel in Tuscany…

Tuscany. Somewhere (anywhere) between Siena and Greve in Chianti. After a week and your eyes start to hurt from all of the beauty, head north to Lake Garda for a couple of days. Then a bit more west to Como. Say hey to George Clooney, then zip over to Turin and check out the coolest giant piazza in Italy. . Head back to Milan, see the Duomo, and reluctantly fly home.

Ugh. I won’t be taking this trip in October. Now I am sad.

Europe!! There are some crazy low fares out there right now

Well, I am actually going to Italy mid-October. Never been before, but I have been told it is a beautiful time of year and that it should not be crowded.
