Hi I am currently a senior, completing Early Action for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am still ambiguous rather I should apply or not, because my grades do not seem to be at its level.

Well, my setting is

Private School –> class size of 89
Took all AP/Honors/Advanced courses possible
ESL student (moved to U.S five years ago)
In-state (luckily, just acquired Permanent Residency last year)
GPA of unweighted 3.8 and weighted 4.2
AP exams
English Language - 3
APUSH - 4
AP Stat - 4
SAT - 1440/2080, CR 640, Math 800, W 640
SAT II –> Math IIC 800, US History 710, World History 610
Attended Project Uplift

It’s not something I have ever read in black and white, but it seems to me that if your verbal score is lower than your math, there is a very logical explanation—that English is not your first language. Also, it seems many schools (and I would think that UNC would too) are striving for diversity in their student populations. For instance, my son had a classmate who immigrated from Russia --he was accepted at UNC over some other students with higher class rank and similar scores. Who knows what really was the “tipper”, but it certainly didn’t hurt him and may have helped.

In my opinion, if a student has been in US only 5 years and has that kind of gpa and SAT score, it says a lot about their work ethic and intelligence.
