which are the cheapest colleges?

Didn’t know that, pretty cool actually.

I live in South Dakota and most of our universities tuition and fees rate for out-of-staters is under $15,000/year and they are easy to get accepted into.

A 2006 post, so the tuitions are old, but these are probably still low priced colleges - I edited out the Canadian colleges because he was wrong about the prices for the Canadian colleges. Granite State in New Hampshire, Eastern Oregon, and Southwest State in Minnesota are bargains and worth at least investigating if you will be paying full sticker price.

None of these are particularly highly ranked (although some are quite good for some majors). If you have a highly ranked college in your own state, I think that this would always be your best bet.

Cheapest Colleges to “get away” to

Here’s the scenario:

You want to go away from home. Go somewhere out of state.
You aren’t likely to get a scholarship, and you aren’t eligible for financial aid, and you don’t want to spend a lot of money, so “sticker price” matters. You want to go somewhere that is good, but inexpensive. A bargain college.

Which are the cheapest colleges to get away to?

Take the US News list of the least expensive colleges and sort them by
out-of-state tuition, and there you have it: Colleges where you could get away and find a reasonably priced annual tuition, room, and board, many in the $10 to $12,000 per year range. I’ve posted the list below. If you don’t mind cold weather and enjoy the out of doors, Bemidji State is a good possibility. And there is a special bonus: free parking in the winter. (Lake Bemidji freezes over and the snowplows keep areas clear for parking lots.)

Here’s the list; sorry the columns didn’t work.

First column is School name
Second “column” is Tuition and fees (in state)
Third “column” is Tuition and fees (out-of-state)
Fourth “column” is room and board

The header should have said

colleges with cheap tuition for out of staters (assume NO need-based aid)

South Dakota Tech, New Mexico Tech, Univ. of Missouri Science & Tech (Rolla).

OOS annual tuition at the U. of South Dakota is $4,790.

Following up on ClassicRockerDad: The SUNYs are pretty cheap for OOS and there’s a lot more to the system than just SUNY-Buffalo and Stony Brook.

Depending on what you want to major in and what * kind * of a college you want to attend, you should look at the rest of the SUNY system as well. Don’t over look the so-called “University Colleges” in the SUNY system either. They are typically smaller and less selective, but still quality places to go—particularly if you don’t want a huge state U.

The only school anyone has listed that I have had exposure to in Computer Science is Univ of Missouri - Rolla. I knew a CS guy from there who was pretty good. The rest of the schools would most likely result in regional jobs in CS, like running the computer network at the local Wal-Mart. Check the regional employers in the area the school is located in. If there are some large businesses who hire CS majors like insurance companies or credit card companies, the school is a better prospect. If you plan to return to your home country, that’s another matter. Don’t know what a degree from LA Tech is worth in England or Australia or Canada.
