Which are the schools that are "reaches" for everyone?

I know that some schools are so selective that they are considered a “reach” for even the most qualified of applicants. Besides the ivy league, what are some of these schools? (It would be especially helpful to post some that might not immediately come to mind!)

Thanks!

Plenty of schools fit this bill:

-the Ivys
-Stanford
-MIT
-CalTech
-Amherst/Williams/Swarthmore
-Duke

you get the idea.

Thanks for the post. Those are schools with fairly well-known reputations, though. I guess what I’m looking for is schools that may not have as much name recognition and that you wouldn’t immediately recognize as so selective.

Off the top of my head: Rice University, Cooper Union, Pomona, Harvey Mudd.

They are all very tough to get into, but to say that they are reaches for even the MOST qualified of applicants might be stretching it a little.

ya all of the mentioned above…

Ill just give you my reaches, even though Im not as smart as the average ccer

Notre Dame
Southern Cali
Boston College
Mich

I agree. There are students, admittedly rare, where no school is a reach.

For example, there was surely little doubt that Chelsea Clinton would be accepted to Yale and Stanford.

Or…“A” student at a prestigious prep school, good SATs, son of a sitting US Senator. You’re pretty much in wherever you want to go.

Washington University in St. Louis fits the description of a college that has become very selective but doesn’t have the widespread name recognition. It is one of those schools where it has become hard to predict who is or isn’t a shoo-in.

Wash U and Rice are both extremely tough, but not yet in the reach for everybody category in my opinion, especially Rice. For the cream of the crop Rice is a safety, Wash U is a match.

“A reach for the most qualified of applicants” but yet is not well known. I don’t know if such a school exists.

well here are some:
Oxford and Cambridge, Ecole Normale, Beijing, Moscow State, …

if we’re limiting ourselves to us,

there’s Deep Springs, Juilliard, Cooper.

Deep Springs

^^^ agreed

its nice to see that you guys think that our little  Moscow State is rated up there with Oxbridge  (its not)

Most of the extremely selective universities are well known, but perhaps WUStL or UChic (both selective) aren’t quite as well known as some.

Reach that is not yet well known? Olin.

Oxbridge
London School of Economics
Pomona
WashU in STL
Stanford
UCLA
UC-Berkeley
Michigan
UChicago
Swathmore
Naval Academy
Most art schools

No school is a “reach” for everyone. There are always super-applicants that can have places like Harvard as matches. However, there are schools that are a safety for no one.

actually LSE = a match/safety if you are a UK applicant, have 10A* at GCSE (or more) and have AAAa predicted A-levels
including maths :)

never seen someone rejected with these stats.

Yeah, “reaches” are going to be different for everyone, with details down to high school attended to consider.

For me, University of Florida is a “reach” because they’ve been getting increasingly selective, and many “shoe-ins” seem to be turning into rejecteds. Maybe only a Florida kid who wanted to use their Bright Futures would feel this way though.

never seen someone rejected with these stats.

I agree. They don’t even interview, so they can be admitting absolutely morons.
