I know that some schools are so selective that they are considered a “reach” for even the most qualified of applicants. Besides the ivy league, what are some of these schools? (It would be especially helpful to post some that might not immediately come to mind!)

Thanks for the post. Those are schools with fairly well-known reputations, though. I guess what I’m looking for is schools that may not have as much name recognition and that you wouldn’t immediately recognize as so selective.

Off the top of my head: Rice University, Cooper Union, Pomona, Harvey Mudd.

They are all very tough to get into, but to say that they are reaches for even the MOST qualified of applicants might be stretching it a little.

Washington University in St. Louis fits the description of a college that has become very selective but doesn’t have the widespread name recognition. It is one of those schools where it has become hard to predict who is or isn’t a shoo-in.

Wash U and Rice are both extremely tough, but not yet in the reach for everybody category in my opinion, especially Rice. For the cream of the crop Rice is a safety, Wash U is a match.

No school is a “reach” for everyone. There are always super-applicants that can have places like Harvard as matches. However, there are schools that are a safety for no one.

Yeah, “reaches” are going to be different for everyone, with details down to high school attended to consider.

For me, University of Florida is a “reach” because they’ve been getting increasingly selective, and many “shoe-ins” seem to be turning into rejecteds. Maybe only a Florida kid who wanted to use their Bright Futures would feel this way though.
