Which award is the best?

Out of these 5, which ranking would you give?

AP Scholar with Distinction
Top 10 Presentations at Research Science Institute 2005
State highest on the AMC 12B
National Merit Semifinalist
Ranked 4th statewide on Arizona State Math Examination

This is for Yale, Duke, UPenn, Carnegie Mellon, and Princeton…

Not exact, but I think the order should be around that.

Would those colleges even know what RSI is though? That’s an in-house award so if they don’t know what the award is or what the program is, they may think it’s really trivial.

ALL colleges know RSI are you kidding?

^ Seriously… RSI is really top notch stuff.

I doubt UPenn/Duke/CMU get many RSI applicants though. Most RSI alums EA, and get into that school, which is usually either MIT or Harvard. Thus, they don’t apply to any of these schools (usually they just apply to MIT/Harvard/Pton/Stanford after taht). I am one of few deferreds, so I’m applying to all these.

zogoto, if it is true that schools like Penn & Duke rarely have the chance to bear witness to an RSI candidate, I’m sure it’s at the top of their list. And yes, I’m sure they know what it is. :)

so why are you applying to all of these and do you feel that you are stepping down?

I probably wouldn’t apply to UPenn/Duke/CMU if I were already in at Harvard or MIT. These schools don’t match my interests as well. I would probably still apply if I weren’t so lazy/cheap though, but in any case, I am deferred and have 13 apps :(

I’m probably behind the curve here…what is your area of interest?

I don’t really have a field of interest, but right now it is mathematics. What I meant in post 9 is really that Upenn/Duke/CMU aren’t as research-oriented (as in not everyone does research, whereas at MIT almost everyone does), and I already have an internship at HMS which I want to continue next year (the field is a really good one, mentor really good, etc.).

you are referring to undergrad research in theoretical math? Why didn’t you apply ED to P’ton? Was it because you wanted H more? What area of math? Game theory? Just curious.

I have never done research in math, although I amy get my degree there. My research areas are (right now) computer science/industrial engineering and bioinformatics.

I didn’t ED because, well, it’s ED. Binding is bad for me haha. Now I’ve procrastinated so much I may not even apply to Pton.

AP Scholar with Distinction/National Merit Semifinalist

what?! AP Scholar with disticntion? Wouldn’t they be able to see that from having 5 5’s anyway? And shouldn’t my SAT Score (2290) be indiciative of a 214+ (AZ qualifying score) PSAT Score? Is Former SI right?

RSI, AMC12B, Arizona, AP/NMS. flippy has the right idea, I think. If colleges don’t know what RSI is, maybe get a rec from an RSI admin (or whatever) and ask her to explain what it is

Zogoto clear your mailbox.

What Does It Matter. Just Put All Of Them Down.

I think OP ran out of room and is trying to pick the most meaningful ones, Joey

National Merit Semifinalist and AP are less/not meaningful.
