Which campus?

My husband was accepted to the main college of a major university. I was accepted to both the main campus and another campus 2 hours away. Living apart isn’t an option for me. I am more interested in the work being done at the campus further away. This would require living in a very rural area, it will be very difficult finding a rental property, and will require a hour long commute for us both if we are lucky enough to find a place in the middle.

The main campus has a prestigious program, but has less people working on things I’m interested in. However, my husband and I could live close to campus, enjoy the community of the area together, and definitely find a nice place to rent. So far, this is the path I’m leaning towards.

Does anyone have any advice on which I should choose?

I’m going for a biological sciences Ph.D.

These descriptions are kind of vague. Perhaps if you specify which cities/campuses you are referring to, you might get a little better advice from people who are familiar with the area.

I don’t think you’re going to get much help, here. Unfortunately, it’s a tough situation and you’ll have to weight what is more important to you.

Any chance you can go to the main campus and have an adviser at the main campus, but work jointly with someone at the other campus?

I second G.P. Since you’ve been offered a place at a spot that would be convenient for both of you, and the main campus will have the resources and transportation arrangements that will make the next half decade of your life easier, I would look into finding an advisor that you’re more or less on the same wavelength with (you say there are fewer people working on your points of interest, but that probably doesn’t mean no one does) and then offer to collaborate with a group on the other end. I imagine both you and your husband would be incredibly cranky after a few months of those long commutes on top of your coursework, lab duties, prepping for qualification examinations etc.
