Which Classes to Register for at CalSO

Hi, I’m planning to take Math 53, CS61A, Physics 7A next year, but I am only allowed to register for 10.5 units at CalSO. Which ones should i register for to minimize the chances of not getting into classes? Also, I have already fulfilled my first RC requirement. Which class would you recommend for RC2? Any seminars/Decal that is recommended first semester? Thanks!

Well, you would never sign up for a Decal during phase I. Seminars are limited in size and thus tend to go quickly, but first priority should certainly be the key classes you want to get into. The R&C classes go quickly, except for perhaps the least desired ones (English, Comp Lit, Rhetoric), but you have three more regular semesters plus summers to address this and it is not as core to your progress nor is it a pre-req for other classes you may want. Thus, if you don’t get in RCB this time, not that big a deal. I wouldn’t think you would want that prioritized by trying for it in phase I.

That leaves Math 53, CS61A and Phys 7A. Physics is going to be a top priority for phase I. Not sure over which of the other two should be in phase I and which is safer to leave for phase II, but I am sure others will fill that in. With your remaining 2.5 units, a seminar is certainly an option.

Now, the realities of registration have to be considered. You may plan to register in Phy 7A and CS61A but find that the CS course is full when you get to CalSO. In that case, you have your backup list - meaning try for Math 53, then for RCB, and if all else fails have some breadth and an AC choice ready because you don’t always get what you want, but (to quote the Stones), you get what you need . . . as long as you are prepared and a bit flexible.

Lots of wonderful DeCals and some good seminars too - really, just go with what floats your boat, personally. Batman or Harry Potter fan? Dance or film? So many choices, it can be hard to pick. Especially since a class may have room but it is at a time that conflicts with some OTHER course you will take. DeCals are like that, for example, typically taking place on certain nights of the week.

You definitely do not need to Phase I CS61A or Math 53.

I don’t know about Physics but you do need to Phase I your R&C class. I would thus Phase I Physics, your R&C, and a seminar / decal. Also, pick Auroux for Math 53 :)
