I think the term you are looking for is “revealed preference”. Here’s a link to one such study:

Thanks, but I was looking for something else. It was a website that allows you to put in the name of 2 colleges and it shows you what percentage of kids choose each school?

It is likely that admitted students tend to favor more selective schools when there are no other constraints (e.g. net price after financial aid and scholarships). Back when UC StatFinder was up, it showed yield rates at various UC campuses which could be stratified by applicant GPA and test scores. It was pretty clear that, for any UC campus, yield was higher for lower stats admits than for higher stats admits.
