Which colleges in Florida could I get into with a 2.6-2.7 gpa?

I’m most likely going to have a 2.6-2.7 GPA by the end of senior year. From the practice tests I’ve taken, I’ll probably end up with 2000-2150 on the SAT (the math is bringing me down). I know I’m definitely going to study my ass for all sections though. I’m also going to take the SAT subject tests for Spanish, USH., and Biology-E, and I’m going to take AP Biology next year. I think I’ll end up getting a B.

8th grade GPA: 3.5
Weighted: 4.0
Algebra 1 Honors: A
Physical Science Honors: B

9th grade GPA: 1.0
English 1: C
Geometry: F
Chemistry: F
Geography: C
French 1: F
Health 1: C

10th grade GPA: 2.67
English 2: C
Geometry: B
Biology: B
World History: B
Theatre(0.5 credits): C
Health Science(0.5 credits): C
Driver’s Ed.(0.5 credits) : C
Art (0.5 credits): A

11th grade GPA:

I think I’m going to have a 3.0 this year. My GPA for the first semester was a 3.0. And I’m going to try to maintain it.

I’ll probably end up with these grades.

English 3: B
Algebra 2: A
Chemistry: B
French 1: A
First Aid: B
Psychology: B
Theatre 2 (1 credit) : D (I couldn’t go to a play.)

Next year, I’m aiming for a 3.4. All my classes are regular except AP Biology and Anatomy and Physiology Honors. I’m also going to get a job over the summer and try to volunteer when I can. I’m going to join Key Club next year.

I feel like I screwed up in high school because of my freshmen year but I still have to make the most out of everything and work hard. Where could I get into?

Well, honestly, not very many four year universities in Florida accept applicants with GPAs lower than 3.0. However, a 2100 SAT is pretty impressive! Remember, most college will give more weight to the weighed GPA because they reflect college prep courses, so AP and honor courses will really help you there. I have a friend who son’s was in the same predicament his senior year. He had a ridiculous amount of EC and volunteer hours (like 300 or something). He ended up not able to get into a four-year college, but he also bomb on the SAT. Really focus on your GPA and SAT. Colleges want to see well-rounded applicants but they want to see that you did well academically even more. My money is on you. Good luck!

Yeah, that’s what I’m worried about. And thanks! I’ll try to.

Thanks! What colleges do you think would possibly accept an applicant like me?

One of the reason I love CC is all you kids who are just so cognitive about life after high school. So, okay, let’s say you pull that GPA up to at least 3.0 (you’re very close!) and do better than average on the SAT (2100 would be fabulous!) then you will probably have no problem getting accepted into Florida Atlantic, FGCU, University of West Florida, and USF. This is doable, so be diligent about your academics and you’ll do great.

Well I don’t know what kind of schools that you are interested in, but first off, obviously any community college. I think that Michigan State may take you? University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Kentucky, Uni of Kansas, Arizona schools too. If you have a website that your counselor gave you that shows the schools’ stats, then look at that to judge as its a great tool! Good luck!

Chance me please! I’ll chance back!

DoLikeCat, you should consider retaking Geometry over the summer through Florida Virtual School. You will need a counselor’s approval. Be sure it’s an honor classes and try to get at least a B. Maybe take a second academic elective as well. Doing well in these subjects will really help your GPA,

@evermom1 I’m not sure if I can get my GPA up to a 3.0. The highest it can get is a really high C average, I think. I think I’m going to be relying on SATs and volunteer hours to save me lol. Also, would my upward trend (disregarding 8th grade) mean much?

I don’t think my counselor would let me since I already got a B my second time around. I actually asked her about retaking classes I got a C in, and she says I can’t. I might try to take a class over the summer though. Spanish 1, most likely.

Yes, that upward trend tells colleges you know you messed up but have been trying to fix it. As for summer courses, any academic elective will help, really. Have you taken Trig? Per-Calculus? My son had a 2.9 going into his junior year. Two honor classes over the summer bumped his GPA up to 3.3 just in time for his senior year. So again, a 3.0 GPA is doable.

Correction, that 2.9 was at the end of his junior year.

@evermom1 USF will be a stretch. This is based on their admissions matrix and recent experiences. Three students I know, who qualify for “Fall” on the matrix, have been deferred with no response.

@evermom1 I’m taking Trig next year. Which classes did he take? I have a 2.3 right now.

And I’ll probably end up with a C in Theatre.

@DolLikeCats, He took Per Calculus and Physic. They were both honors. He managed an A in one class and a B in the other. Academic electives are your best bet in pulling up your GPA, and I think you should take advantage of the summer and take as many as you can do really well in. Two would be my suggestion. If you take more academic courses next fall and do well in them, your GPA will be at 3.0 by end of the first semester. The biggest issue with that is that you would have to wait until the end of first semester to start your college application and many schools(I know that both USF and FGCU open their application process in November) give preference to early applicants. In my area, first semester grades don’t come out until January. Yikes!

There’s an old saying: there’s a lid for every pot.

There are plenty of schools out there that will be happy to have you.

You’re going to finish with lots of AP credits, probably a very decent SAT score, and a transcript that shows that you’ve matured tremendously since you were 14. They want the person you are NOW, and your transcript will show that THAT student is capable of so much!!

Make an appointment with your guidance or college placement counselor. He or she will be able to point to schools within your price range that graduates from your school just like you have had success with.

I just ran the SuperMatch at left with your GPA of 2.6 and SAT of 2000, with FL as the location, nothing else.

The first matches that came up as 100% match were the ones listed below. And know that it’s only a starting place; there are lots more out there.

Florida Polytechnic University
Lakeland, Florida

Johnson & Wales University at North Miami

Note on the list above - they are all private, for-profits, or community colleges. Polytechnic would not have any statistics available, as this is its inaugural year.

Grade improvement will make a tremendous difference in what is available to OP. I think that with an overall 3.0, FGCU and University of West Florida will be matches (based on the acceptances of other students.)

Could I get into FIU? I think I might apply there. I’m going to try my best to get a 3.0 by the end of my senior year.

That’s the spirit, @DoiLikeCats. This is from FIU’s website:

Up to May 1st, admissions criteria for the 2015-2016 academic year is:
Term / GPA / Exam Score
Summer 2015 / 3.0 / 1400 SAT or 20 ACT*
Fall 2015 / 3.3 / 1530 SAT or 22 ACT*
Spring 2016 / 2.8 / 1550 SAT or 22 ACT*

With a 3.0, your best bet for admission is summer session. But check out Spring semester. You got this!

Apply for the summer session at FIU and your odds are pretty good. FCGU and UWF are worth applying to, too.
Did you use grade repair/grade replacement? All FL public schools are required to offer it and public universities have various policies but will always take that replacement grade into account (either to replace the earlier grade or as an average with the earlier one.) Did you retake all your F and D classes? Definitely retake Theater 2
In addition, look into Flagler - close-knit atmosphere that may support your new found academic focus better than the large classes at FIU. Check out Lynn, Barry, Stetson, too.

@MYOS1634 I think I’m going to do that. And my counselor hasn’t replaced all of my grades yet. My Fs are still counted in my GPA along with the grades I got my second time around. I think I’m definitely going to end up with a C in theater.

I’ll think about those colleges. I think I’d prefer a bigger city though. I spent a lot of my life in this small, conservative city, so I’d like a change.

Thanks a lot for helping me out!
