Which colleges should I apply for?

About me

White male from Sweden
Want to major in Journalism(Advertising)

My application is very focused on journalism and graphic design.

Gpa: 16.6/20 (Swedish gradesystem)

SAT: No results yet expecting min: 1700 max 2100

EC

2 year floorball
1 year badminton

Published book with my class (not the entire grade) 25 students
posters ect for schoolplay

Great recs from civics teacher, graphic communication teacher and media teacher

As my project I did a 16 page magazine(it’s in swedish), should I send it in? Also done other stuff… send?

And I will need some fin aid. Can take a loan for about 20 - 28k…
I choosing among these colleges:

Northwesten U (dream school, so I’m applying to it) - do I have a chance? medill!! :P

also syracuse U
American U
Boston U
CSUN
LMU
Michigan state
Northeastern
U san fran.
Temple
Loyola U Chicago

If I were to narrow it down to 4 or 5 (maybe 6) schools, which ones should I pick?

I would appreciate some suggestions if you have some.
preferably with a soccerteam

Definitely apply to Loyola U Chicago–they have a great journalism program and they LOVE international students. Their mission includes the goal of having students from every country in the world. What makes you interested in Northwestern? The student bodies of Loyola U Chicago and Northwestern are polar opposites. Anyway, you’d most probably be accepted at Loyola U Chicago based on your statistics, so definitely apply there (if you use their online application your application fees are waived =) )

I can’t say much about the other schools as I don’t know much about them. But I’d say you would have a decent shot at Boston U.

Best wishes.

Thank you! LUC is interesting, nad ever more with that information
I’ve heard(read) a lot of good things about NU and it seems like a great school. And I guess I just have this feeling about it , that it’s the right school for me :stuck_out_tongue:
And ofcourse thier top of the line journalism school Medill is very appealing to me.

Since I can’t (I could but it would be expensive) visit the school I have to base it on what I read and the “feeling” and so far Northwestern is my first choice :)

You should try Maryland-College Park. The Philip Merill school of journalism is excellent, and their soccer team won the College Cup in 2008

Just an FYI, college soccer isn’t really that popular overall in the U.S. If that’s important to you, look up the Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conferences. Those would be your best bet.

Soccer isn’t VERY important and it dosn’t need to the the top teams, but I would love to be able to play.

But the academics is first priority.

I still stand by Maryland as their journalism school is top notch. And the soccer team is just an added bonus :p

I dont really know a thing about soccer, but unless you’re like incredibly good (play for top teams, on all star teams, highest level, etc.), you’re not going to be able to play at an ACC or Big Ten school. I would imagine if you were that good, you would be recruited, since college soccer has MANY internationals.

Ohio U is also good for journalism.

It’s hard to know if you have a chance since you haven’t taken the SAT yet.

It can be hard for int’ls to get student loans here. Are you getting your loan from your home country? Are your parents co-signing for them? How much can your family pay? You may need to show ability to pay to get your VISA.

LMU is very reasonably priced for int’l students.

bump…

UGA has very good journalism department as well.

^^^

The OP can’t pay full-freight.

OP…can/will your parents co-sign a loan? Can you get a student loan from your home country?

Yes, I can take a loan from the National Board of Student Aid (Sweden). But they limits the loan to about 20 - 28k a year. The amount is slightly higher if the school use quarters and not semesters(don’t ask me why).

Bump…

Third bump…

Does NYU give any fin aid to internationals?

University of Minnesota Twinn Cities. They have a good journalism major , 300 or so students major in it. They also have scholarships for people of norwegian, swedish decent from like types that migrated to the area. AND the school for OOS cost 25,000 per year leaving you with plane fare.

So, international students can’t get aid from boston U… only merit scholarship. Would I even be considered for that? Is there any point in applying?

What is your GPA when changed into a 4.0 scale?

International aid…

Boston University cost of attendance: $48, 097
number of Int’l students at BU:1136… # who rec’d aid: 105…avg award: $15,765

NYU cost of attendance: $49,040
number of Int’l students at NYU:1492…# who rec’d aid: N/A…avg award: $10,000

It hard to say what my gpa would be on a 4.0 scale …

we have a 4 grade scale - MVG (pass with special distinction)=20, VG(Pass with distinction)=15, G(Pass)=10, IG(Fail)= 0 and you can also get an -, it’s pretty much fail to and gives a 0. Our transcript doesn’t show + or - (which is a bad thing for me :frowning: )

do i get this right, you have: A=4 B=3 C=2 D=1 F=0 ? and +/-

If you divided by 5 it’s 3,32/4, but then again it’s not that simple. If feel that it’s atleast a bit better than 3,32

Maybe you can do an estimation?
