Which common app essay topic?

Hello there, fellow CC members,

Since you all seem to be very knowledgeable with the college application process and Emory University, I would like to seek your advice on which common app essay I should submit.

This essay is about my background, the neighborhood I grew up in and how the under-privileged area had the most privileged citizens in term of altruism. Straight-forward.

I wrote about my experience in learning how to play a certain game in elementary school. A little more creative, discussed how I gained my basic motivations for life, persistence, practice, etc.

Thank you so much!

Number two sounds more interesting, while number one sounds a bit cliche and romanticized. Could you do the second proposed essay, but mention in passing the underprivileged neighborhood and how learning the game helped you navigate the challenges in your upbringing?

I vote for #2! It’s more realistic and personal.

Regardless of topic, I think the point is to tell the reader some things about yourself. If you think of it that way, you may be able to combine the two and stay within the word limit.
