Which dining commons should I work at?

Basically, I’ve been hired by both Ortega and Carillo, and I need to decide which one I want to work at. I’m a transfer student, so I don’t really know what each one is like. My main concern is that I want to work at whichever environment is less stressful and fast-paced, and altogether is just more laid-back. Is there a difference between the two, in this regard? Also, would one of them be better for a junior like me? I’ll be living in Santa Ynez, so they both seem to be roughly equally far away.

I’d appreciate any and all insight regarding this matter. :)

Well, Carrillo is the one in Manazita, correct? Ortega is in the middle of campus, so it will be closer to your classes and less out of the way. However, Carrillo has better food, though I don’t know if you care about that. Ortega serves mostly freshmen, I believe (because it is surrounded by freshmen dorms) while there would be more upperclassmen dining in Carrillo, since there are more upperclassmen in Manazita. That’s important if you would rather not run into your classmates/friends when you are working.

Here is a article from someone who worked in Ortega:

Ortega also seems to be less popular than Carrillo and the nearby DLG, so it seems like it’d be less stressful. You’d have less customers.

the only thing that can get pretty stressful about ortega is if you have to work take out there. during the school year, especially during finals, take out is packed. and you have to make everything right there, so that makes it a little stressful.

but overall, dissonance is right, ortega is less popular and less crowded, therefore it’s probably less stressful.

I prefer ortega’s food, so get free food from ortega.

What’s the difference between Carillo and Ortega’s food?

Oh, and thank you, dissonance, for bringing up some very good points.

The reason why I prefer Ortega is because their lunch and breakfast change everyday, while the lunch and breakfast from Carillo are pretty constant. Plus, Carillo’s lunch seems to be kind of vegan to me.

There’s no more walk-in takeout (at Ortega or Portola). The only way you can get a meal from takeout now is if you order it a day in advance.

Hm, so it seems like Ortega might be the better choice. But I’m a little confused, because Carillo seemed a lot more “in-demand”; I had to fill out a questionnaire for it in addition to the application, whereas for Ortega I just had to fill out the application.

Does either of them offer more seafood than the other? I’m trying to go for fruits/vegetables/seafood. Does Carillo have more emphasis on red meat and/or poultry? o.O
