I am a vandy freshman, and I’m starting to think about choosing a dorm for my sophmore year. I want a single room, and I’m not a partier so a dorm with a quiet reputation would be nice. Also, being a Blair major, I would like to avoid anything on Peabody. Any suggestions about which dorm I should request? How does the “housing points” system work?

Your best bet would be to attempt to join a Mayfield project so you can get a room there (all of them are single). Also, aren’t some of Chaffin’s rooms single as well?

The point system is just a way of differentiating people into catergories of priority based on class and hours earned. As a freshman, you’ll basically in the lowest rung. If you try for a room at-large in the lottery, you may not get your first choice. However, if you were to join a Mayfield project you’d be guaranteed a single room in one of the lodges.

a more general question: which dorms are NOT known for their parties? I’m also a freshman looking for somewhere quite next year. (Not really interested in the Mayfield project.)

Tolman is quiet, TOO quiet from what I’ve heard. And unlike Kissam or Branscomb, you will live in your room and never mingle with anybody else in your hall. Sounds depressing.

Towers is my recommendation. I really like living there because you can have a single room, you have an almost 24/7 munchie mart/varsity market and two foodplaces in the basement, you’re five minutes from Saratt and 10 minutes from Stevenson, and you’re right on west end avenue and greek row.

To any Vandy students,
My son is a soph with junior standing due to his AP’s, but since he transferred to Vandy as a sophomore, we’ve never gone through the housing selection process. He is not a partier and wants a single in a good location. What is the McGill Hall Project like? Do they accept only Philosophy majors? Is it hard to get into Tolman or Cole? He knows no one trying for a mayfield house. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

so can someone tell me what the Mayfields are like? How much time are you expected to spend on the “project”? Do each of the single rooms lock? Thanks.

Mayfields are little living-learning lodges where ten guys or girls get a nice house-type thing. Each lodge is two stories, ten single rooms (they lock; I’m not sure why they wouldn’t), two bathrooms, a large common living room and a kitchenette. The scope of the service project depends really on the the group. I’ve heard some pretty intense projects and some pretty flimsy ones.

McGill accepts all majors to the best of my knowledge. It’s sort of the artists’ hovel on the Vanderbilt campus. While no Branscomb, it’s not exactly quiet. Tolman and Cole next door are the quiet dorms. I once had a philosophy class in Cole, it’s so quiet and empty; I couldn’t believe people lived there. I think they are a bit hard to get into as they’re one of the most convenient upperclassman dorms on campus; right next to Sarratt and the A&S campus.

thanks feenotype, So it is also hard to get a single in Carmichael towers? My son has so many credits from Ap’s that he is really classified as a junior, even though this is his soph year of college. Will the credit hours consider him a rising senior or a rising junior? Thanks

I don’t think it is difficult to get a single in towers, especially as a rising junior. For this year (so the housing lottery we did in spring of 05) I believe that all the rising sophomore who wanted it received singles in towers.

That’s good to hear. We are hoping that our rising junior can get into Tolman, Cole or a Towers single. It really helps to know that there is a good chance of one those. Thanks!

Points based on academic standing will not matter as a transfer. You will be given space available. But you’re likely to end up in one of those three dorms anyway.
