<p>I’m a freshman applicant applying to UChicago, et al. My original idea was to write my common app essay about a certain idol of mine (and probably an idol of many others), and how he inspired me to wonder, to be skeptical – and how his influence played a significant role in my decision to major in physics. However, I’m from Alabama, and I thought it might also be a good idea to write an essay about my southern heritage and how it has affected who I am today. I like my original idea, but I’m afraid it’s not “personal” enough for a “personal essay.” Also, the southern heritage essay would probably stand out more in the admissions process, wouldn’t it?</p>
