Which exam(s) to self-study for AP exams in 2014

Here’s my situation: I need to have taken a full-year (or two half year) AP exam by the end of my school year in 2014 for my application to UK universities so I need to choose a subject or two to self-study starting from summer (or September at the latest). My course load isn’t very rigorous (as AP courses aren’t offered at my school aside from sciences and math) I’m taking AP Statistics next year and that’s all. I’m taking Calculus AB and and self-studying for World History this year (haven’t taken Calc test yet, will take in late testing).

I need to choose either one from the 1st group or two from the 2nd group or one from 1st and one from 2nd.

1st group:
English Literature
English Language
French Language
European History
United States History

2nd group:
Environmental Science
Government and Politics: Comparative
Government and Politics: United States
Human Geography
Macroeconomics
Microeconomics
Psychology

(Note: I’m an international student and thus have no background knowledge in US History and Government, so keep that in mind.)

Hello!
I actually took most of the classes in both groups, so I think I can help you out.
In the first group, I would recommend English Lit or Lang. They both don’t really need to be studied for, unless if you decide to take Lit then you would have to read some books in order to do one frq. Besides that if you have a strong (or at least a functional understanding) of the English language then you should do fine.

Psychology is really easy to study for. It’s basically a terms test. If you know all the words then you should have no problems making a 5.

Environmental science is one of the easier science AP’s. It’s basically common sense mixed with a scientific focus. I would recommend this AP if you like science, or want to have a easy but though provoking AP.

I could offer my opinion on the other AP’s, if you wanted, but for now these are the AP’s I consider to be the easiest.

I’ve been hearing that Psychology and Environmental Science are the easiest APs, but consequently they are less impressive than the others. It’ll be better if I have one of the “harder” APs (but it should also be doable, cause I’ll need to get a 5 in order to be admitted to a British university)

So far, English Language sounds appealing to me, so do Government and Economics, as they are relevant to my prospective major (I want to major in Law, which is an undergraduate degree in the UK).

If you have experience in other AP exams, please give your opinion.

I’m actually taking US government and macroeconomics this year and i can confidently say they are relatively easy but challenging at the same time. You have to work hard to understand the concepts, but once you get them down they are easy. You should totally take them, especially if you are planning on majoring in them.

Out of all the AP’s you have listed, I believe the us history test is the hardest. It wasn’t too difficult for me (i made a 4 on the exam with a mediocre teacher and cramming the night before), but there seems to be a general consensus among my friends and some CC users that us history is quite challenging.

I haven’t taken the french AP, but i’m assuming it would be challenging.

I took lit (hoping for a 5) and lang( i made a 4), and I personally believe that the language exam was the easiest of the two.

I havent taken the Euro exam, but i heard it was kinda easy. As long a you study and memorize the terms you should make a good score.

Human geography was actually one of the few AP’s i enjoyed. The concepts are easy to understand and are interesting. Not the hardest AP, but would be considered “medium”.

I hoped that helped!

I have never self studied, but besides the usual easier APs(Lang, human geo, psych), chemistry might be plausible next year. It will have less content next year. I am a firm believer that self studying for any exam is possible, but requires studying since the tests do in fact do a nice job of testing the content absorbed during the year.

I would try european history and the two economics.

I recommend either AP English Language or literature. If you prefer not to read, then take the AP Eng Language exam. It is relatively easy if you know the functions of the English language & how to analyze the rhetoric & literary devices. The second group I would recommend comparative government or US government. considering that you are majoring in law, it is nice to know the functions of the government. I would say take US Gov because that way you will have a rounded knowledge & will get to learn something new. Good luck!
