Which Industry do CS Grads Mostly go Into Right After School?

Which industry has a high demand for software development?

The software industry. :::falls on the floor laughing:::

Don’t all industries need software development?

Yes, that’s true, but companies in such industries usually buy the services of one software firm or another (this is if they need custom software).

I’m in the baltimore/dc area and most of the cs grads who go right into industry go into the defense industry (either for the government or contractors)

The market is both cyclical and regional. Some years insurance/health care may be hot, in other years telecom. Aerospace has shrunk to a niche unless you are in a part of the country where that is more dominate. It also depends on your focus in CS. A more financial/accounting/MIS focus would find something in banking or business on the coasts. Others may head into some kind of robotics, automotive, or industrial automation industry perhaps in the midwest. Or you could go into a pharmaceutical or biomedical area. Then there’s always software houses or video games. That’s the beauty of CS: you could work on warehouse automation or radar navigation systems. Consumer products with embedded systems or marketing data mining. Energy and petrochemicals to airline reservation systems or hospitals or health records managements. Wall street to Main street and anything in between I’ve left out.
