Which is a better essay topic for the common app

I am stuck between two choices 1) choose someone who has had an influence on you: for this one I want to do my French teacher who I have had for the past three years. I think she is the most amazing and fascinating person. She gave a new appreciation for French and art and just life in general. As a sophomore I was apathetic in regards to French, but now as a senior, I am currently in a French course by myself with her and it is a post-ap French class. My main problem is that I don’t have one pivotal point or story, 2) I took this from the Hampshire supplemental where you have to describe a time that you were immersed in a culture or a community different from your own - for this one, I am doing going from a huge (1000+) middle school, that was very liberal in its views and policies and diverse to an All girls uniformed catholic school, with only 350 students. How I was able to learn to accept discipline without compromising my personality. I also chose a school where I did not know anyone. Also, how I met some amazing teachers there, and how very often I hold the minority view as well as being an Atheist. Sorry if this is convoluted, I’ve been writing tons of supplemental essays. Any advice would greatly be appreciated!!

I would pick the second one because, from what you described, the second one seems to focus more on you and how you have dealt with a difficult situation.

P.S. It will also tell colleges that since you can handle a transition from one school to another, you can probably also quickly adapt to college life.

That’s what I was thinking but colleges also want students who have good relationships with their teachers and it allows me to highlight my different interests.
The schools that I would be sending this are:
Hampshire – repetitive
Clark
Skidmore
University of Vermont

hmmm… I’m not familiar with any of those schools, but if any of them are small liberal arts colleges, those are the ones that would value teacher-student relationship more (so I would use the first one). If they are all large universities, then they would probably consider whether you will be able to adapt to the larger school environment.

Anyway, if you decide on the first essay, make sure you focus on yourself and not the teacher.

I like the second idea better too.
