I know that Rutgers University could have become an Ivy institution had it decided to join way back when the league was forming, but instead it chose to educate the masses by becoming the state university of New Jersey. UCLA, on the other hand, is currently considered a Public Ivy. So which university provides a better education and college experience? Disregard tuition cost when discussing these two universities because I’m out of state for both.

Are you serious? UCLA by light years. Rutgers is my safety, and UCLA is my super reach.

/thread

So you think it might be a worse university than it would have been because it didn’t join a sports league a long time ago?? Wow…

In any case, UCLA>>>Rutgers

uck-la definitely

This is a longstanding urban myth, that has no factual basis whatsoever. UCLA is a far superior university in every imaginable way.

UCLA is definitely better, and this is coming from someone who lives in NJ and goes to USC, lol.

And the Ivy League is a sports conference, so Rutgers could have very well remained exactly the same as it is now, except it’d play Harvard, Princeton, etc.

I think the OP’s point was that Rutgers is a pretty old (colonial) institution (like the Ivies), and had it not become New Jersey’s state school, it could, conceivably, have become something as selective as an Ivy League school, sports conference aside.

However, I think the general consensus is that UCLA, as of now, is academically superior by a pretty wide margin.

No, it is exactly how I stated it: a longstanding myth.

“Public Ivy” is a really desperate term.

IMHO, Rutgers and UCLA are at the same level. Any kid on the east coast is going to tell you UCLA is better because face it: we all wanna get the heck out of here.
Kids in California usually defend UCLA, because unlike Jersey kids they actually have some pride.

They’re the same thing. If you go to Rutgers you’ll see some nice maple trees, at UCLA you’re gonna see palm trees.

I freakin love being from jersey.

not a whole lot of palm trees, really… but sure

UCLA, the 4th or 5th best college in California, is far better than Rutgers, the 2nd best college in Jersey.

California owns.

It depends. If you go to Rutgers, you’re pretty much guaranteed a job with anyone else who went to Rutgers. There’s a lot of pride in it if you decide to go there.

UCLA ftw!!!

I dislike both. : )
