Does either one give you an upper hand in admissions?

Many universities strongly encourage you to apply online. It makes everything easier for them. Some even waive the application fee if you apply online.

Neither would give you an upper hand, but I would recommend you apply online if possible.

This has pretty much been debated ad nauseum. On the one hand a physical application might possibly instill some sense of personability. One the other hand, admissions officers generally encourage online submissions for everyone’s convenience, so a physical application might annoy them to some minuscule degree… or something. The short answer is that is it’s very unlikely to make a difference. A lot of schools either print out the electronic apps or scan the digital ones anyway.

Some even require it now–Stanford, for example, only allows you to submit your application online (with rare exceptions).
