which is the better school?

Johns Hopkins University

The honors program at University of Wisconsin-Madison

Tufts University

I am planning on doing a double major in international relations and political science.

MAAAJOOOORRRR???
and undergrad or grad

JHU all the way.

tufts is overrated

I would say JHU as well. That’s the one I would pick.

I would think JHU, followed closely by Tufts.

for international relations i would definitely go with JHU.

Tufts is highly overrated. JHU or Wisconsin Honors. It depends on money. What is the aid looking like?

Wisconsin is ranked #10 in poli sci, while JHU is 21
[NRC Rankings in Political Science](NRC Rankings in Political Science)

^^^^^^But Johns Hopkins has the better name, so those numbers are meaningless. ;-)

Um for International relations, Johns Hopkins is one of the top 5 and/or top 2 programs in the country only dependent on who you ask.
For Politics: Johns Hopkins INVENTED the term “political science” and is a great school with fabulous access to politics in Baltimore (with the city’s Mayor being an alum), to the greater Maryland state (with many local politicians being alums), and to DC (with the short distance and the SAIS school’s MANY alums in DC, abroad, and that the new GOP chair is a JHU alum and Tim Geitner is a JHU alum as well).

hopkins, hands hown.

the only school i would even consider turning down Hopkins for, in those two fields, would be Georgetown…and even then, Hopkins is a stronger overall school with a stronger political science program.

For IR, JHU is pretty much amazing. It’d be kind of silly to turn it down, unless finances are playing a really big issue.

Such a strong poli sci program that it’s not even listed in the top 20 in the NCR rankings? How can that be?

"But Johns Hopkins has the better name, so those numbers are meaningless. "

This is a ridiculous statement. Better name to whom? Wisconsin is one of the strongest universities in the entire NATION in the social sciences.

10 in Poli Sci, 10 in History, 15 in Econ, 15 in Psych. #TWO in geography and #2 in Sociology.

^ oh boohoo. I’m talking about combined overall, the double major is stronger than the counterpart at UWisc.

While It isn’t an NCR Top 20 program, it certainly is strong and excellent. Also, the NCR is dated back to 1993. Who knows what the new one will be? So I advise you keep your opinions related to relevant and more modern data.

Vociferous, rjfk is being sarcastic. He is actually a proponent of UWisc here. fyi.

also: fyi:

http://personal.lse.ac.uk/hix/Working_Papers/Hix-PolStudiesReview-2004.pdf

^^ In this GLOBAL ranking of political science programs, Hopkins ranks at #28 while UWisc is at #37.

It doesn’t mean much, but I’m just saying: Different rankings show different results. All results point to the fact that while Poli Sci at Hopkins isn’t the best, it is still an extreme reputable and strong program with a great reputation in the Nation and the World :)

"So I advise you keep your opinions related to relevant and more modern data. "

Hmm okay. How many professors retire every 5 years? Uh that would be NOT MANY. Also it is NRC not NCR, which are the most respected rankings within the academy.

What are you basing your assertions about JHU on? Hearsay?

^ Vociferous:

I’m basing my opinions on knowledge of the programs at Hopkins first hand. Also, it is not “5 years” but it has been about 1.5 decades since the last “NCR” rankings. hardly relevant. 15 years ago, we didn’t have the ipod. 15 years ago, WashU was still ranked in the 20s or 30s (idk, lol).

Things change a LOT with time, which is why dredging up old data is stupid and meaningless. Either way, no ONE was bashing UWisc, yet rjofk decides to bash Hopkins. I don’t understand why I need to be skewered here when I didn’t bash UWisc prior to his comment whatsoever.

edit: I really really don’t see why people need to get SO defensive about UWisc. It seems like everytime anyone recommends a school over it, a supporter will automatically BASH that school instead of defending their own.

In general, JHU too for me too, but a Wisconsin’s honors program would be just as excellent, in my opinion.

Oops. I used to travel through Dayton alot and NCR just popped out. I meant the NRC of course. There are so many rating sources out ther that maybe National Cash Register does a listing of programs as well? I only bash when people use lines like, “hands down.” From what I can see, it’s not a slam dunk case for JHU over Wisconsin. At least not for poli sci.
